Fast Food Commentary

Oh, and anyone who lived in Brantford or Waterloo has probably choked down a "Fast Eddies" hamburger. There's a reason why they're 99 cents.

The most revolting meal I have ever had at a chain was at a Perkin's restaurant in Sudbury (I was dragged up to Sudbury for a wedding). I had the cheeseburger and fries, and was so disgusted by the food that I must have drank a litre of water right afterwards to try to flush my system. Blech

I love Arby's! In my undergrad years in Ottawa, I would practically OD on Arby's everytime I visited Toronto!

The Big Mac is probably the most disgusting burger of all the big fast food chains. In Canada, of the big ones, Harvey's is best, but nothing in the fast food world beats an In-And-Out burger, Animal Style. Mmmmm.

I always remember the "Lord of the Flies" parody on The Simpsons. When the kids are first stranded on the island, Sherri and Terri whine simultaneously "I'm so hungry I could even eat at Arby's!"

Due to a hydro outtage in our neighbourhood last evening, we ran up to the South St. Burger Co. in East York for take-out. The burgers, poutine, milkshakes -- all mediocre.

South Street & Hero

South Street Burgers is better than was given credit for above.

Burger is real fresh beef (not frozen) cooked to order, and the topping selection is great....three kinds of mustard, real leaf lettuce, 2 kinds of peppers, 4 kinds of cheese etc.

The bun could use some work.....and the burgers aren't huge, but they're good.

The fries are New York Fries (fresh-cut, peel on); I must admit I've never been a big New York Fries person....mebbe the potatoes they use?

The Onion Rings (also fresh made) are just.....different....I think they put ginger in the batter, that what it tastes like to me.....great texture.....odd taste.

******

HERO Certified.....yummy egg bread bun, patty is clearly frozen, similar type to Harvey's or Wimpy's ...nice enough....comes in a range of sizes 4oz, 6oz, 8oz....I find the 4oz plenty filling.

Again good selection of toppings, though smaller than at South Street, and no lettuce, at least when I was there. Good chunky red onion though, creole mustard, and for extra $ you can have caramelized onions or sauteed mushrooms on your burger.

Fries are pretty good, not sure if they're fresh or frozen.

Salads are very mediocre.

They have a great looking steak sandwich, but I haven't tried it yet.

They also offer an organic burger patty (also untried)

We've been to South Street twice now, and both times it's been mediocre. Selection of toppings doesn't save it. We really want to like it, but one can get a tastier burger at A&W or Harvey's. But everyone has their own taste.

Has anyone tried the Burger Shoppe on Queen East in Leslieville?

Again good selection of toppings, though smaller than at South Street, and no lettuce, at least when I was there.

So South Street has like 30 toppings? Do you pay extra for each one or is the regular price just jacked up? Hero has at least 25 toppings...although the lack of lettuce is strange, the olive spread and boursin make up for it.

Ya, it is pretty damn bad.

Actually the chicken fingers are great there. They use real breast fillet and the crispy batter is delish. Haven't tried anything else there - don't think I ever will either!

Toppings

South Street does not charge anything extra for any of its toppings except cheese.

The various mustards, guacamole, salsa, lettuce, onions, peppers, pickles, mayo(s) etc. are all included with your burger.

If your order a cheese burger you get your choice of the several cheeses at no additional charge, and generally, however much you'd like (over a 1/3 lbs of cheese and they might say no, not sure) :)
