Encana Towers, Calgary

Ooooooh, Foster & Partners are the architects. That almost guarantees a great looking building.

Foster's newly-completed tower in Sydney, Australia, is terrible, IMO.

I dont think Im alone as being more concerned with Toronto's infill than more supertalls.

Toronto is in the process of refinement, not a boomtown spree.

But really, hats off to Calgary if they can pull off the tallest office tower in Canada. A monument to big thinking and success.

Exactly. Cities change over time. Some become wealthy. Some fall into obscurity. Calgary is on the high point of a wave driven by rampant speculation and uncertainty over oil. The future will be tough to predict, but at the momment, they are rolling in piles of ever more valueable Canadian Dollars. And when rich people spend, they tend to spend extravagantly and with little thought of restraint.

Calgary may very well have Canada's tallest tower. And it will likely loom large in their skyline and be part of every skyscraper geek's wet dreams. But at the end of the day, Calgary still wont be Toronto. And by the time that tower does rise in Calgary, Toronto will have a couple hundred, if not more, new midrise to highrise buildings built.

Supertalls? *Yawn* How unoriginal. Let me know when a neighborhood like Kensington Market appears in Calgary, now that is something that would actually be worth getting excited over.

Encana towers will not be canada's tallest, but it is supposed to be taller than Petro canada tower, which is currently calgary's tallest (at 700 ft), as for location it is supposed to be between 6th and 7th Av and 1st St SW and Centre St, if memory serves me correct. Encana has already bought the York which is a low income building and will have to incorperate it into the design as its a historical building. I don't really know a whole lot more about the project, but I never heard that it was going to be canada's tallest.

They don't anymore. That's why Calgary will never be Toronto and Toronto will never be London.
