Education Director Proposes Boys-Only School

A separate school for boys will become a separate school for the troublesome and underperforming boys. Just like an Africentric school is a magnet for kids who can't or won't hack it with everyone else in school. Thus, if I was a parent of boys, I'd not want my kids to be anywhere near that school, and instead would find the best scoring school and put my kid there.
To be honest, I think that an all-black school could actually work really well. As an elementary school, I can see it doing wonders for preserving & teaching heritage, as well as helping more at risk black youth (of course, depending on where the school is.)

I don't think that it's a good thing in the bigger picture, but I don't think that it'll be bad on it's own. Become a delinquent school? Unless they screw up bigtime, I doubt it.

It'll work great for everyone else, since a large part of the at-risk and troubled kid population will be removed from the mainstream. That said, I doubt it would be good for those students sent there.

I had a good chat about this at my daughters' school with the other parents. Their response, especially from the women, was that for over a hundred years the girls have had to fight and struggle their way through a male-dominated, sometimes-mysoginist school system, and now that the girls are finally doing better than the boys, the boys get their own school away from the girls. No one cared enough about the girls to give them their own school away from the boys, instead they just had to struggle through the system. I have to say, being a dad of two girls, I had the agree with much of their point of view.

The TDSB already has a girls-only school. People don't seem to note that, do they?

if mixing males and females in the same classroom causes some sort of disruption to the learning environment, the issue isn't the coed factor, it's the teacher's inability to maintain order in their classroom.

My wife is a teacher, and trust me, it is not that simple.

well, you're right. sometimes it's not just as simple as that. sometimes the teachers just suck at what they do. (not implying your wife).

i've had my share of bad teachers and i know my share of people who have become teachers and are horrible persons.

answer me this, if segregating based on sex is a good idea because it reduces sexual tensions, will hiring practices be discriminatory? because let me tell you something, there's no environment more disruptive than an all male classroom with a female teacher who is at the very least just barely attractive.

I don't know if that's legal, but I have the feeling boys would do better if taught by men. Based on my experience in school, male teachers simply had more respect given to them.

No, they can't not hire women teachers because it's a boys-only school. I went to a girls' school and we had some male teachers. Of course, there might be fewer women applicants for positions at said school. But who knows?

well then it kinda defeats the purpose and the whole thing becomes useless.

That's why I say it'll require careful planning.

On one hand, it could turn into a delinquent school, filled with all the black children (which are statistically more at-risk than other ethnicities,) who can't function in a regular school and instead prefer to pretend to learn about the underground railroad while hanging out with their homies.

On the other hand, it could turn into a great school. Attracting young black children who's parents want them to be educated in their history and break the notion that all black teens wear their pants at their ankles and have no future. The school could just be like a catholic school; completely ordinary in almost every sense but just adding in some subjects that appeal to a certain demographic. Teaching black children about their heritage and history could be a good way to get them involved in school and learning at a young age, mind you, while also just learning about their heritage.

Yes, but what is black heritage? What does an Muslim black African from Sudan have to do with a someone from Jamaica, beyond skin colour?

Imagine if we proposed a white school. What would we teach? You'd have to cover the histories, cultures and languages of every European country, plus Russia, Ukraine (yes, they're Europeans too), Israelis (are Jews allowed in the white club?), white Africans in South Africa, Kenya, etc., South Americans of European descent, Australians and Kiwis, Canada's first European settlers, etc, etc, etc. At the end of the day, why should an English speaking white kid born in Toronto have to know about the Dutch Royal Family or what South Africans like to eat? I'm a history buff, so I'd appreciate it all, but a white school would be ridiculous.

I think the point is that it'd push to attract black children who are ancestors of American or other slaves. I don't know much about this, but that's the idea that I'm getting about this school. Obviously a Black Muslim could go to the school, but that could not be what the school's all about.
