So, I'm interested in getting a drone, but I know rather little about them, so I thought I'd ask here since it seems several members have them. What's a solid entry level model? I don't need some high-end thing. Basically something that will consistently hover in specific spots to film my tennis technique from above (though I suppose I could use it for UT construction updates too :p)

There are lots of opinions out there, but my impression is that most of us UT drone pilots are flying DJI products.

For someone starting out, I'd suggest looking at the sub 250 gram models - they're exempt from most Transport Canada regulation and licensing requirements (other than the obvious "fly safe" rules).

Here is one I recommend, it's reasonably priced - the DJI Mini 4K.

FYI, we sometimes exchange info on the Aviation in Ontario thread

Apologies if this video is a bit long and may be a little dry, but it gives a solid overview of Transport Canada's drone regulations.

All drone operations in Canada are regulated by Transport Canada, so it's worth taking the time to watch this before you start flying your new drone.

The host is talking about a different DJI model, but it's also a sub 250g drone, so the information applies to the Mini 4K as well.

Definitely would recommend the Mini 4K as well if you don't want to break the bank.

One of the things I'd recommend is double checking that you have a new enough phone that is not a Google Pixel. The Mini 4K controller requires connection to a phone so it can stream the view. newer iPhones and Samsungs should work fine. Just bear in mind that if you're using an iPhone, that it can get pretty hot to the point where the iPhone may actually warn you about temperatures.

As well if you're using an android phone, make sure you are able to install apps outside of the play store. The DJI Fly app is available on DJI's website and not in the Play Store.

I personally am flying a DJI Mini 4 Pro, but that's entirely because when I'm not flying and taking shots of construction, I'm messing around with recording myself on runs to see how the obstacle avoidance works. If after the Mini 4K, you want to upgrade, the Mini 4 Pro is definitely where you'd want to be.

Looked at them with advice from above earlier in the year. Did not purchase as a local came in and photographed the fields (farm) at various periods of the year. Very useful.

Now we are looking at and discussing a work drone that can lift 100 litres at a time ( spraying). Mainly Chinese origin I think ( so far). Expensive kit as well. And you can purchase used ground based pull sprayers for far less. But the versatility? The ability to spot spray in a very short time frame? This will be interesting.

What I use:

Great footage/images should only fly once!

These are what I use. If youre planning on recording video, go high endurance. If you're planning on just taking photos, most cards will work fine.
