Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

Extension doesn’t need to be finished 100%. Focus on building STC station and take your time completing Sheppard and Lawrence stations. Let’s learn from the crosstown mess.

Depends on what kind of bottlenecks they are facing. Tunneling began from the north, thus no train will get into the new section until all tunneling is done. Lawrence East is going to be a deep station, if they hit problems completing the structural or electrical work there, the trains cannot pass to STC.

Maybe at the final stages, if they hit a labour shortage during the station interior work, they can prioritize the STC station, and let Lawrence and/or Sheppard open a few months later.
 
Busway won’t be ready for 3 years, So this isn’t going to happen. We need to look at opening up Subway asap. Extension doesn’t need to be finished 100%. Focus on building STC station and take your time completing Sheppard and Lawrence stations. Let’s learn from the crosstown mess.

When the TTC last studied doing something similar with the TYSSE, the time saving were less than a year, and the cost was equivalent to building the busway.

 
Josh Matlow passing the buck, TTC and the city needed to work together on this. Busway can still be built quickly but Ford will have to step, finance it and remove all this red tape. Simplify the design and keep costs down, we don’t need a York busway 2.0. Keep it simple and turn it over to the community for bike and walking trail when Subway opens.
 
The minister can waive the requirement for an assessment. Which seems entirely reasonable here, given it's only a temporary use. Of an existing track bed!

At the same time, this smells of overdesign. You don't need to design something like this to death. It won't need to last long.
 
Unless there is an imperative to remove it, such as to provide overtaking or storage tracks for the GO trackage, I would argue to leave the busway in place. After all, there will be subway maintenance shutdowns from time to time, and perhaps other uses other than convenient entrance/exit for deadheading vehicles.

This is the conservative version of deferred spending. They have no desire to ever build this so study, study, study and study some more until they don’t need to build it and get to save the money. To be fair they need to save money somewhere to pay for this subway they are building. The riders pay in the meantime but ultimate this is what a deal with the devil looks like.

Oh and let’s not forget that the Eglinton east LRT was essentially cancelled from study after study after study because of no money. I know some people think that line is useless but it was still a new transit project.

It might also be good in providing a good fast BRT between Kennedy GO and Agincourt GO. But if retaining it, then when the Line 2 extension opens, do the long-term design/construction then.

Recall the discussion when they built the BRT from Downsview station to York University, on all the things they could do with it after the subway opened to Vaughan. And yet there are tumbleweeds blowing on it now.

This project is just as dead as the Waterfront East LRT or the ferry terminal expansion. Until the city puts money towards this nothing will be built sadly.
