Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

Its a real shame that we have a insatiable subway fetish here. imagine how much more infrastructure we couldve had if we werent brainwashed into thinking the only way is the subway...
We really should have just bit the bullet and paid more for custom cars or rebuilding part of the line in 2006. Maybe we could have also gotten an elevated extension to Malvern by now.

Mark 1 cars are the only thing that can run on the current line without rebuilding Ellesmere Tunnel at at cost of $150-$200 million and 18 months shut down. The line is only haft of the original plan.

If it wasn't for the Pan Am Games and ML, LRV's would be running on the line from Kenney to Malvern today. ML didn't think the line would be finished in time for the games with the thought of building the extension first and then rebuilding the existing line after the games with an 2018/19 for the whole line. The extension to Malvern was to be elevated.

A few TTC board members representing Scarborough put their foot in the doorway to have the subway extended considering one was an cycles in the first place.

Here we are 4/5 years after the line should have open and forcing riders to wait another 7/9 years to ride a subway in the name of "SUBWAY IS A MUST"

That saving of 5 minutes in transferring is a a drop in the bucket for travel time until the subway extension opens now. 50% of the riders will still be spending extra travel time after the subway opens

To prepare for the decommissioning of Line 3 Scarborough by the end of this year, TTC will be upgrading the bus terminal at Scarborough Centre Station to accommodate the interim bus service that will be in place until the opening of the Scarborough Subway Extension.
The bus terminal will be under construction from March to November 2023, affecting all routes to some degree. Before construction starts, service changes to five Scarborough routes will take effect on Sunday, March 26, 2023:

Bus terminal construction has been completed. The following service changes will take effect Sunday, September 3, 2023:

134 Progress
913 Progress

The 134C Progress and 913 Progress return to service connecting customers between Scarborough Centre Station and Centennial College.

985 Sheppard East Express
985 Sheppard East Express will no longer extend to Centennial College.

Durham Region Transit (DRT) 920
Due to the current suspension of service on Line 3 Scarborough, DRT 920 buses will move service from McCowan Station to Scarborough Centre Station. DRT customers will be dropped off at Town Centre Court to access the station. TTC customers bound for Durham Region will board in the terminal at Bay 1.

Update: May 2023
Stage 2 of construction at the Scarborough Centre Station bus terminal is scheduled to begin in May 2023. The north side of the bus terminal will re-open and the south side will be partially closed for reconstruction and paving.

9 Bellamy
134 Progress

The 9 Bellamy and 134 Progress currently terminating at McCowan Station will return to Scarborough Centre Station. These routes will layover off-site on Borough Drive as necessary. 9 Bellamy service levels will remain unchanged.
The 985A (Don Mills Station-Scarborough Centre Station Express) will continue to be extended to McCowan Station to reduce congestion at Scarborough Centre Station bus terminal

21 Brimley
The 21A Kennedy Station-Scarborough Centre Station and 21B Scarborough Centre Station-Steeles will be replaced from Monday to Friday during peak and midday periods by the 21C Kennedy Station-Steeles via Scarborough Centre Station.

913 Progress
Express 985 Sheppard East Express
Service to Centennial College previously provided by 134C Scarborough Centre Station-Centennial College and 913 Progress Express will now be provided by the new 985D Don Mills Station-Centennial College which is an accessible connection.
All other branches of 134 Progress will temporarily not serve Scarborough Centre station until summer 2023 and instead terminate and layover on Bushby Drive at McCowan Station.

Customers travelling to Scarborough Centre should transfer to Line 3 Scarborough at McCowan Station or to 985A Don Mills Station-Scarborough Centre Station Express or the 985D Don Mills Station-Centennial College Express for an accessible connection.

Routes 16 McCowan, 21 Brimley, 38 Highland Creek, 43 Kennedy, 129 McCowan Northbound, 130 Middlefield, 131 Nugget, 132 Milner, 133 Neilson, 169 Huntingwood, 939 Finch Express, and 985 Sheppard East Express will continue to serve Scarborough Centre Station but will layover on Borough Drive or at McCowan Station.

Here's the thing, to this day I can't find anything that backs this claim up. From my knowledge the TTC and the City have never actually properly checked whether or not its possible.

As noted and linked above, the TTC estimated in 2006 that the shutdown would only be 8 months. And the bigger issue was the curve at Kennedy station.

Also there's nothing that ever precluded the TTC issuing a tender for vehicles that could take the existing curve.
 
I don't see that replacing the Mark 1s with more ICTS stock would have actually helped the SRT. The induction rail would've been equally susceptible to winter weather, and the alignment of the line through the asscrack of Scarborough would've continued to be so.

Was there some kind of unrealized plan for the development of residential areas along the line? If there wasn't, it's hard to fathom why anyone thought the line, as it was built, was a good idea. As far as I can see, it would've made more sense to run the original streetcar plan down the median of a nearby road (perhaps Midland?).
