Costco

The Star's wine critic praising Costco over some of the wines they are offering and their value pricing:

OF note, the six wines she lightlights are all priced below LCBO price, generally around ~10% less, though in one case, closer to ~20% off. So far as I understand the current pricing regime, that means Costco is more or less selling many wines at-cost.

I wonder if they will do the same with beer prices? Too bad they can't carry hard liquor. I actually like the Kirkland Tequila. Of course a one liter bottle of tequila in the US at Costco is like 30 bucks or less.

If you want to Kirkland in Canada, send in your email now; I know the province is considering allowing private label wine (not sure about the hard stuff). But they will release a set of changes before Christmas.....time is ticking.

As unfortunate as most of that list is (promoting Bread & Butter - which is on brand for her), there's been talk that the Kirkland branded wines probably won't see shelves until 2026 in Ontario.

For a fleeting moment, I was excited at the chance to finally grab Kirkland Barolo and Brunello.

As noted in my reply above, currently, private-label wine is prohibited in Ontario. The province is considering changing that, and we will know their answer by Christmas. If you want it permitted here, send in your email.

Beer is being sold near cost as well at Costco. Top 10 and Moosehead plus Flying Moneky Juicy Ass, Steam Whitle, Beaus, and Muskoka to get the 20% Small Brewer/Craft. Molson Candain 60 Pack 355 ml can for 84.99.

As with Wine, I have learned, Costco has removed sales tax from the on-the-shelf price, but you still pay it at the cash.

So the prices aren't as good as they seem.

Pricing policy really should be consistent.

I remember when I first heard beer was so much cheaper in Quebec (its not really, it is a little bit cheaper); but the big thing was if you bought it retail, sales tax was added at the cash.

I haven't actually compared prices directly, but my feeling when shopping for alcohol (beer) in Quebec is that it feels more expensive, not cheaper.
