Coming soon to your university: unisex washrooms

What I wonder is what would Ms. Ulici say if it is some "mainstream" woman suggesting having women only hours is a good idea?

AoD

women only gym?

because women don't want to be seen in such a situation by potential partners?

wouldn't a man only or woman only gym be offensive to to gay men and women who don't want to be seen working out by potential partners also?

isn't a more logical solution to have group times where an agreed group of people comfortable with eachother workout with eachother? a group can consist of straight men and women, gay men and women and transgendered people who are all friends and don't feel shy around eachother. another group can contain the same types of people but who are the ones attracted or uncomfortable around the other group, etc.

all bathrooms should be unisex, one toilet per room with fan, sink, locking door, etc.

who the heck likes stalls anyway? they're not private and have those joints in the structure where people can peek, others can hear you fart, rip off your pants from under the door, kick in the door, throw garbage over the top of the stall, etc.

It wouldn't happen Alvin. I hate to sound crude, but such a request wouldn't come from the increasingly few white and Canadian-born Asian students left on that campus. I estimate that a good 70-75% of the students on that campus are conservative, South Asian and Middle Eastern Hindus and Muslims. Perhaps every second or third girl you see there is wearing the headscarf. They are now *the* voice on that campus, and the largely white administration, terrified of being branded racist and wanting to appear as progressive as possible, would in no way, shape or form challenge the appeals from these students for gender-separated facilities. Won't happen. You're talking about a campus where, based on what I've heard from the students who work for us, arranged marriages are almost the norm for many of the students there. There is a campus "pub" that only survives because it doesn't rely exclusively on alcohol sales, and where the biggest news in the past week was India losing the World Cup of cricket. It's a different world out at Morningside and the 401, like it or not.

Why do unisex toilets frighten you so? Why are you opposed to accomodating religious beliefs? Why should your conservative values be imposed on other people?
Andrea, IMO the toilets are a silly issue, from silly students who look for any perceived injustice in order to make their university days interesting. As for relgious beliefs, the moment accomondation of such beliefs is contrary to our Charter freedoms (such as demanding that women be banned from parts of the school), religion, be in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, or whatever, must step aside. How's that for conservative values? For the record, I'm not conservative, and as a father of daughters I am proudly pro-choice and believe strongly that my daughters' future must include financial and spiritual independence.

I remember an interview in Toronto Life with Kyle Ray. Ray was discussing his new house, and mentioned that in the bedroom loo they have only a urinal and a sink, no toilet. I thought to myself what a great idea.

What's the point in sending your daughter to university if she's unable to make the basic life choices?

I don't see what the big deal is. They've had women-only workout periods at UofT for quite a few years now. It had nothing to do with religion - a friend was telling me it was just a lot more comfortable to workout in an environment without hardcore workout guys.

I doubt that's the only reason, but this seems like very old news to me.

"Arranged marriage" probably isn't what you think it is. It's basically your parents hooking you up - you're under no obligation to date or marry the person though.

Old school arranged marriages are still around, but not all that common.

Either that, or he and his partner have some weird scat fetish thing going. You never know what these demented homosexualists are up to

[irony intended, as the Roseanne Skoke-esque use of "homosexualists" ought to indicate]
