Centennial College is updating its site plan at its flagship Progress Campus to accommodate a more intensive use of its existing land.
“(It’s) no secret Centennial College is growing by leaps and bounds,” college spokesperson Mark Toljagic said in an email. “The growth will be contained on the existing footprint of Progress Campus. What you will see is our big parking lots replaced by new academic buildings over the next 20 years.”
Planners expect private vehicle ownership to decline as people adopt electric ride-sharing services in the next decade, Toljagic said. Therefore, large parking lots may become a thing of the past.
The city held a community meeting about the proposed amendment to the official plan Oct. 24. The amendment process is ongoing. Toljagic said it’s unlikely for Centennial to have city approval before next fall.
In 2018, the college’s board of governors approved a master campus plan, which “supports campus revitalization and acts as a reference manual with which to monitor and manage all future development,” said Toljagic.
