Cathedraltown...suburbia with a twist

Thanks for the pics. In the photo with the houses it looks like it could be somewhere in Eastern Europe. I like it.

it just always bugged me that they called it Cathedraltown... I think Cathedral Heights would have sounded a bit less tacky. No doubt this is an exceptional bit of architecture, but I dont really like the idea of communities built up around churches as they will tend to be semi-exclusive and may create nodes of homogeneity. I think the strong point for Canada is our mixing of ethnicities, religions, incomes etc...

Groups tend to colonize areas whether you have them centered around landmock churches or not. I hear your point about not wanting people to be sequestered in their own little world, but people belong to things - religions, cultures, clubs - and need to congregate to be able to enjoy the benefits of that. People cluster around places of worship all the time - this is just one of the more high profile cases of that.

"Resurrecting" this thread to show some photos of suburban development around Cathedraltown. Haters of suburban photos should turn away now...

The new town homes look somewhat better but the older stuff on the site is just plain hideous ... I can't see how anyone would pick this VS the more typical suburban development - just drive a bit north to Newmarket / Aurora.

Amazing photos! Great job :)

Though for the most part it looks like most suburbia, I like the fact that the garages are behind the houses on laneways, or so it seems for at least part of the development it is.

I am also very impressed with this:

Wow! So totally different than the rest of Toronto's suburbs! I feel like I'm looking at photos of Europe!

The only thing distinguishing it from other suburbs is its embarrassing pretension.

Its amazing that the people creating it had so little clue, or so little commitment to what makes creates an old European town feel. Its the closeness of the buildings and the intimate scale. Front lawns and grass verges and 5 lane roads don't belong.

The best way to photograph contemporary suburbia is to use high saturation and high contrast, because the fresh grass and warm materials of the lackluster houses look best that way. I think its a shame a truer New Urban development couldn`t have been built around that cathedral.
