Buying a home on a main road.... Pros and Cons

good topic. My house is on Davenport, which is busy especially during peak traffic hours but quiet at night. I don't hear traffic at all when the windows are closed (get good windows), and my backyard is largely insulated from the noise. So given the price benefits, it is not a bad move. Main roads are also on transit lines and get plowed first. In the big city, it is hard to escape noise completely anywhere.

Anecdotally I can tell you that how high you are off the ground makes a big difference for noise. There is a big difference even between ground floor, 2nd floor and 3rd floor. This is even true for residential side streets if your street is heavily trafficed by pedestrians or street parking. Trees also make a huge difference if there is a row of them between you and the street.
