Seems like too many world leaders are nostalgic for the Cold War.

Bush: 'World War III' possible if Iran goes nuclear

WASHINGTON — U.S. President George W. Bush warned on Wednesday a nuclear-armed Iran could lead to World War III as he tried to shore up international opposition to Tehran amid Russian skepticism over its nuclear ambitions.

Mr. Bush was speaking a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has resisted Western pressure to toughen his stance over Iran's nuclear program, made clear on a visit to Tehran that Russia would not accept any military action against Iran.

At a White House news conference, Mr. Bush expressed hope Mr. Putin would brief him on his talks in Tehran and said he would ask him to clarify recent remarks on Iran's nuclear activities.

Mr. Putin said last week that Russia, which is building Iran's first atomic power plant, would "proceed from the position" that Tehran had no plans to develop nuclear weapons but he shared international concerns that its nuclear programs "should be as transparent as possible."

"The thing I'm interested in is whether or not he continues to harbour the same concerns that I do," Mr. Bush said. "When we were in Australia (in September), he reconfirmed to me that he recognizes it's not in the world's interest for Iran to have the capacity to make a nuclear weapon."

Mr. Bush, who has insisted he wants a diplomatic solution to the Iranian issue, is pushing for a third round of United Nations sanctions against Iran.

Russia, a veto-holding member of the Security Council, backed two sets of limited UN sanctions against Iran but has resisted any tough new measures.

Stepping up his rhetoric, Mr. Bush said a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a "dangerous threat to world peace."

"We've got a leader in Iran who has announced that he wants to destroy Israel," he said. "So I've told people that, if you're interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon."

Iran rejects accusations it is seeking to develop a nuclear bomb, saying it wants nuclear technology for peaceful civilian purposes such as power generation, and has refused to heed UN Security Council demands to halt sensitive uranium enrichment.

Chief Iranian nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani was quoted by Iran's official IRNA news agency on Wednesday as saying that Mr. Putin had delivered a "special message" on its atomic program and other issues. No other details were given.

Mr. Putin's visit on Tuesday was watched closely because of Moscow's possible leverage in the Islamic Republic's nuclear standoff with the West. It was the first time a Kremlin chief went to Iran since Josef Stalin in 1943.

Asked about Mr. Putin's "special message," U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey said he was not aware of any deal or offer put forward by Moscow to Tehran over the nuclear program.

On Russian opposition to Caspian Sea states being used to launch attacks against Iran, Mr. Casey reiterated that Mr. Bush kept all his options on the table but that the United States was committed to the diplomatic path with Tehran.

ww2, wasn't good enough. they gotta have a ww3. it will makes the series more official.

with a ww3, it will sound more complete and three is a nice number and is parallel to the trinity, on the 3rd day, three strikes you're out, the three stooges, two's a party, three's a crowd, etc...

President Bush has struck me since the opening days of his first term, as a person in a job too big for him to handle. The pattern just keeps on repeating itself with his befuddled foreign policy.

After using his brand of constant fear mongering in some form or another regarding North Korea (while he spent so much time in not using diplomacy). then the false claims of WMD in Iraq that justified a very expensive war, and now the threat of what Mr. Bush views as a possible World War coming out of the actions of Iran, the neo-cons that inform and/or influence this President have inadvertently made him into the proverbial "Boy Who Cried Wolf," once too many times.

We already know enough about what has been going on in Iran to not question that there is danger there, but instead of constructing a cohesive and comprehensive strategy to deal with this situation, Mr. Bush has predictably chosen the most crass of alternatives. Ultimately, Mr. Bush must recognise that he has no political capital left, whether it is abroad or at home. That political capital was squandered a long time ago in the desert and cities of Iraq.

With the distinct possibility that before he leaves office, being forced into once again deploying troops to Afghanistan, this time from Iraq. With the dollar seriously devalued; with the volunteer army exhaused and in shambles; with once valued allies declining any further involvement; and with his own party giving him the cold shoulder for months now - even the threat of WWIII may not be enough to make one last foray into this troubled area of the world.

sweet! thermo-nuclear holocaust! thanks president bush! your the bestest war-monger ever!, I believe Einstien once said "I know not with weapons world war 3 will be fought with, but world war 4 will be fought with sticks and stones". lets get this nut away from the nuclear launch codes....

If you define war as "an active struggle between competing entities", then wasn't the Cold War one of worldwide proportions? WWIII is over then, though it wasn't as bloody as first two.

Trilogies are always better than just having a sequel. Everyone knows that the sequel sucks, but the 3rd one tends to be really good.
