Black Lives Matter back in conversation at Pride Toronto

BLM movement finds support in crowd, despite disrupting this year’s parade, at town-hall meeting on Tuesday night.

Pride Toronto hosted a community town hall Tuesday night at Daniels Spectrum to give feedback on Toronto’s first month-long Pride event. However, the focus for many was Black Lives Matter and the demands which they .

Punam Khosla, 58, has been an activist for the LGBTQ community for years, and also for people of colour. She says she doesn’t go normally go to Pride anymore, but when she listened from home this year she was excited about what she saw as social justice coming back to the community.

“They took a very strong position on these black shootings and these black youths, they were very bold and brave and very out as queer people doing that work. And they were honoured as this group in Pride and I was very pleased about that,” said Khosla.

Things quickly heated up within the crowd at Tuesday’s event, though, as the dispute resolution process — used to review and resolve complaints about Pride — was brought up. After a speaker who did not give his name said he had filed a complaint against Black Lives Matter over its parade-disrupting protest, shouts of “shame” and “racist” could be heard throughout the venue.

Pride’s board of directors did not respond to any of the individuals that voiced opinions or concerns, announcing as much before the open-mic event. The crowd seemed generally supportive of Black Lives Matter, though some speakers objected to one item on the list of demands: the removal of police floats from future parades.

Alexandria Williams, 27, herself part of Black Lives Matter, called it a privilege “to see the police as a force that can protect you.

“The minute that we even say that we are against the police, that is the one thing that overshadows everything. One of the demands we asked was to make sure we had ASL interpretations, that's a vulnerable community right there,” she said in an interview.

Tuesday was the launch of Pride Toronto’s two-day consultation to plan for the future after a summer that drew fierce criticism and the executive director’s resignation.

“Pride has become a global money-making event,” Brian De Matos, secretary of the steering committee at Queer Ontario said before Tuesday’s event. “We need to get back to the original roots of Pride and make it political again.”

Some of Pride Toronto’s former partners opted out of this summer’s festivities due to problems that were brewing long before Black Lives Matter launched a protest during the parade, calling for better representation of minorities and fewer police.

Queer Ontario, a provincial group that advocates on behalf of LGBTQ rights, was among the groups that opted out of the parade, saying Pride Toronto is focusing too much attention on corporations that provide a lot of money instead of grassroots organizations.

“We need equal space for all folks. That’s what inclusivity is about,” said De Matos, adding there have been public consultations without much result before. “I hope we’ll see real changes this time around.”

In case you were wondering why people like BLM keep pushing this fantasy that only whites are racist, is that they think it helps legitimize their need for double standards. They also know to pick on those most vulnerable to their tactics. Why do you think they picked on what is probably the most inclusive, least racist organization in the known universe...Pride Toronto, and then have the gall to make outlandish accusations and demands against them? It's all quite jaw-dropping.

Chicago Has Its Deadliest Month in About Two Decades

In a city wrestling with a rise in gun violence and turmoil in its police department, August seemed like the longest month. By midnight on Wednesday, 90 murders had occurred in August alone, making it the deadliest month in Chicago in about 20 years.

Chicago, the nation’s third-largest city, has experienced more homicides this year than the bigger cities of Los Angeles and New York combined.

The number of deaths here this year, 471, is about 50 percent higher than the same period a year earlier. Nonfatal shootings have risen at a similar rate. More than 2,300 shootings have taken place so far this year, mostly on the South and West Sides and most of them involving African-Americans.

Except no such accusation was made. But what else do you have but straw man and ad hominem fallacies to defend your position anyway?

What I was referring to of course, was former Deadspin race-baiting, pro BLM, anti-white blacktivist...Greg Howard, who likes to pretend the USA is still a 19th century, southern white supremacist governed world. Since this is even a false narrative in the USA, it's even more absurd to translate this to 2016 Toronto and even more specifically, the Pride organization.

And BLMTO is simply a branch plant of BLM USA, which is why it is a non-starter from the get go. They prey on overly politically correct ultra-liberal groups to intimidate because they know they are more likely to comply for fear of offending somebody. I am one of those overly liberal, anti-conservative types, but I don't believe in PC at any cost...you have to know when the line is crossed and just stand your ground against racist hate groups like BLM, despite the false front they put up. Their pranks have given them the visibility they desire, but it also clearly exposes them for what they are at the same time...and most people see that.

But unlike the legit Civil Rights Movement, BLM has no moral high ground to back them up. Which is why Pride Toronto should grow a set, and do the right thing by instead of bowing to the absurd demand from BLM that they should ban police from participating, they should instead ban BLM, as they were the only group openly and blatantly officially practicing racism at their boot during Pride (we won't sell you a t-shirt because you aren't black). There are more reasons they should be banned, but that one alone should be enough to bar them.

Her previous racist/violent tweet was not an isolated incident. A March 30 posting on her Facebook page she made the following post:

“What wypipo don’t understand is that this is not like our elder’s movement. We will snatch your edges and clap you back into ashes. We will also beat that ass Becky. Run up.”

The word “wypipo” is slang for “white people,” the word “Becky” is a racist slang word for white women. Khogali’s posting threatens to “beat that ass” of white women, the phrase “snatch your edges and clap you back into ashes” appears to be a kind of a death threat.


Khogali was a member of the Black Liberation Collective, a militant student organization with chapters at universities across the US and Canada. The BLC’s statement of principles on violence:

“We understand that continuing to remain peaceful and encouraging others to remain peaceful at the hands of white supremacist oppressive violence is illogical and immoral. We support those who believe that nonviolence is a tactic, but we are aware that this is not the only way to dismantle the system that has humiliated, physically and literally enslaved, unjustly murdered, and continues to devalue black people in America. We will strive for liberation by any means necessary, including but not limited to: armed self-defense.”
