The Sagrada Família is the synthesis of Gaudí’s architectural theory and practice. The first stone was laid in 1882 and the architect worked on the project for over 40 years. During the last 15 years of his life, Gaudí lived in his workshop-studio in the church. During his lifetime, Gaudí completed the four towers of the Nativity façade. He left an overall plan of the project and his surviving drawings have enabled building work to continue. When the Sagrada Família is completed, it will have 18 towers, the tallest of which will stand 170 metres.

The last image suggests how much Calatrava's organic columns in the BCE Place Galleria owe a debt to Gaudi.

Nice pictures, thnx.
I've seen that cathedral in person too :D
They say that the're restoring the older parts of the cathedral on one side, because it's already quite old, and that the're still building new parts on the other side.
It will surprise me, if this cathedral would be completed within my lifetime.

Great pictures. Thank you. I had seen pictures of this before but had not realized that it was still under construction. What an impressive place.

Has anyone seen an image of what the completed cathedral will look like?

If it had been built in Toronto, all that construction work would be on the condo conversion.

Wonderful shots, thank you.

But I find even the best pictures of the Sagrada don't quite convey how awe-inspring it is in person--it's hard to conceive of just how huge it is without actually going in.

The fact that it's in a great neighbourhood (Eixample-Dreta) helps too.

^Eixample is one of Europe's finest neighbourhoods (IMO). The streetpattern there reminded me much of any NorthAmerican city, but there's also lots of fine architecture everywhere, take Gaudi's House for example.

I think this neighbourhood also shows that a neigbourhood can be very dense, without actually having tall skyscrapers.
