Yesterday, 15 May 2008 I found myself randomly up on Dupont and Bathurst, curious about my old haunts from a decade ago. I got my first job in Toronto on Dupont--I lasted 2 weeks:)--near the Beer Store. So, the area felt strangely familiar but also strangely foreign after a nine year absence. Some highlights from the grim, working-class-meets yuppy-artsy-craftsy strip:

Dupont feels like a pedestrian unfriendly speedway compared to Bloor West, so I found this old garage sign amusing:

An example of the artsy/crafty/crappy (imo) shops along the strip:

My first Toronto job was getting cleaning supplies for fussy doctors, restaurant owners, Forest Hill dwellers and all sorts of other weirdos. Very odd they'd shop here since Wal Mart is cheaper. Turns out, I wasn't cut out for warehouse work....

Did someone not obey the "brake" sign just down the street? I was curious, so wondered if there was any blood splattered in the windshield. I think the Explorer owner survived this time....

A look down Christie St from Dupont:

Universal Grill looks like my sort of place...except I saw some hipster types standing outside--a good or bad sign? It's at Shaw and Dupont.

It was hot, a man was standing holding a heavy packet of shingles waiting for the Annette/Dupont bus, the rest of the strip along Dupont is very grim walking territory, so I (unusually, as I'm hard core:) ) caved and got on the bus to the 'burbs...;)

Maybe I'll have the energy to cover more of Dupont as the summer goes by. Stay tuned....

Wow, I remember reading that article! Ten years ago already? Yikes.

Does Alfred Holden still write for the Annex Gleaner? I always looked forward to his history tours.

I apologize about my photographs: they were kind of crappy. I might be back to check in on my old employer--they were closed. I'd love to buy a house around the Vermont/Palmerston Gardens/Brunswick Ave/Dupont/Bloor area. I just can't make up my mind if I want the quiet of the west side of Bathurst or the student activity of the Brunswick/Howland/Wells strip. Oh, and I need to save $200,000 for the down payment...:)

It's a mixed nabe for sure. Hmmn, lets' see. Do I buy that yellow Lotus Elise in the window today or should I think about it? ... hmmm:)

One of my favourite Toronto buildings is on Dupont: a turnofthecentury factory made entirely of industrial glass panels. It is now used as a furniture restoration workshop.

Dupont is such a weird street. It's old school industrial on the north side, and Annex on the south side. I usually only drive on Dupont when Yonge, Avenue, and Bathurst are closed due to snow, and Christie is the only way out of downtown Toronto.
