2024 United States presidential election

Shapiro would have upset the anti-Israel movement the Dems covet, while at the same time the Jewish vote is assumed to be locked in with the Dems anyway.
This is a bit of conspiracy theory being spread by Republicans. That Shapiro wasn't picked because Jewish. Walz was picked quite simply because he was the best communicator in the bunch. And he connects with exactly the type of voters that Democrats need to neutralize at minimum and win if possible. He's proving fantastic at it.

Look at how effective he's been at painting MAGA as weirdos. There's been no attack this effective till now. All kinds of discord on how anti-democratic they are. But he comes in and calls them weirdos and it's breaking them. And that only works because of who Walz is. Clinton's "Basket of deplorables" didn't hit the same way. But "weirdos" is taking off.

It's a risk to be sure. He's the most left leaning VP nominee in decades. And completely unapologetic about it. But his ability to connect and authenticity could pay off.

One of the CNN commentators last night was saying Walz is a positive populist as opposed to Trump as a negative populist. Upbeat and fun bs ranting and raving against everything. I thought that was an interesting take.

It's exactly what he is. A leftist populist. And he's exactly who JD Vance claims to be: a real heartland American. It's exactly why it's working so well in this campaign. MAGA nutters have spent so much time on stereotypes and caricatures of Democrats and "the left", that they forgot what real Americans look like. And now that the Democrats have a "real American" on their ticket, the contrast being drawn, is making Republicans panic.

The best comparison I heard? Walz is the guy who randomly talks your ear off at home depot about various bolt sizes and torque requirements. Vance is the guy who is yelling at the Panera Bread cashier about the drink machine being busted.

No other nominee would have been this successful at drawing a contrast. Everybody loves astronauts and Kelly is a real life American hero. But he's not relatable. Shapiro comes off as a typical suited up politician. He may be sincere. But he can't help who he is. Walz is exactly that middle aged teacher and coach you knew in high school. And Kamala Harris is that energetic principle in elementary school. And nobody votes against their favourite teachers.

At first I was surprised she didn't pick Shapiro, but the more I see and learn about Walz, the more it makes sense to me that he was the savvy choice.

Fox News is reaching, as always.

Nearly thirty years ago, Walz was stopped for speeding, then arrested when he blew slightly over the limit, pled guilty (to a lesser charge) and now doesn’t drink at all. This shows me he’s human, made a dumb move (while causing no harm), learned from it and committed to decades of public service thereafter. What’s not to like?
