2018 Ontario Provincial Election Discussion

Some rumors:
Would make sense why all these announcements are being made, but of course, rumors.

Also an interesting proposition on Reddit:
Why can't they stagger the minimum wage based on age? Under 18 is $11, 19-25 is $13, 26+ is $15. This reinforces the "minimum wage jobs" provide experience for young people while providing a "living wage" for older people.

Not sure if calling early election is ever a good thing - the optics is never that great. As to the minimum wage by age - that will just create an incentive to get rid of more mature workers, and it may prove counterproductive.

And because of all the new offerings McDonal's has (coffees, smothies, etc) it seems like they have even more staff than they use to.

Sure. As I said, automation in restaurants isn't intended to replace staff. In most cases, where it's successful, the staff count (particularly in the kitchen) increases.

It's about increasing revenue for the same amount of real-estate. It works better in some places than others.

The Liberals are getting massacred in the SSM by-election. Maybe it is time for Wynne to step down...

Anyone who is still doubting Patrick Brown and the entire PC party should be knocked awake from this massive Tory victory tonight. The fact that the Liberals came in 3rd should show that the Tories have a good chance at winning a majority next June. Plus, Brown will be a force to be reckoned with on the campaign trail next June - tonight shows that.

The north is one the areas where the hydro prices and rural school closures are really more acutely felt- the PCs and NDP would be wise to continue hounding the Liberals for failing to fundamentally fix those issues.

Yeah, as usual, I think it's a bit much to draw any sweeping conclusions from by-election results. The new Forum poll out today shows the Liberals just moved up into a tie with the PCs in Toronto.

Liberals Creep Back Into Contention in Toronto June 2, 2017 @ 8:30 AM | Filed under: Ontario, Toronto CC Image courtesy of fw_gadget: http://bit.ly/2sihwD6 Liberals Creep Back Into Contention in Toronto Claw back support from weakening PCs in the city Toronto, May 31st – In a random sampling of public opinion taken by The Forum Poll™ among 1035 Toronto voters, amongst those decided and leaning, the Liberals (34%) and Progressive Conservatives (34%) sit even. A quarter (25%) support the NDP, and (5%) say they support the Green Party. (2%) say they support another party. Respondents most likely to say they support the Liberals include those 34 and younger (38%), females (38%), the least wealthy (55%), the least educated (44%), public transit users (39%), and living in North York (41%). Respondents most likely to say they support the PCs include those aged 55-64 (42%), males (41%), the most wealthy (54%), with some college/university (35%), or a college/university (35%) or post-graduate degree (32%), and living in Etobicoke (48%). Respondents most likely to say they support the NDP include those aged 35-44 (31%), earning $40,000-$60,000 (32%) or $80,000-$100,000 (31%), with a post-graduate degree (28%), and living in East York (37%). “Following months of weak numbers for the Liberals, they’ve bounced back slightly in fortress Toronto, likely their most important region. With a variety of big-ticket, campaign-style announcements in the budget and its aftermath, it seems as though for now, the Liberals are making inroads with the electorate,” said Dr. Lorne Bozinoff, President of Forum Research. Forum really needs to stop putting "York" and "East York" in their polls - those numbers are worthless.
"Worthless"? They may no longer be legally defined boundaries (other than local councils) but they still add an understanding to the demographic polled, and the results of that poll.

It has bearings also for the councillors.
