2014 Municipal Election: Toronto Mayoral Race

This was talked about in the Ford forum but considering it's about Mayor race I will put today Mayor poll in here as well

5 Candidates, (brackets difference from May 21 poll)
Chow 38%(+2)... Tory 28%(+1)... RFord 20%(-4)... Soknacki 5%(+2)... Stintz 4%(+1)
Approval rating (bracket difference from May 1 poll)
Tory 68%(-1)... Chow 64%(+6)... Soknacki 54%.(-2).. Stintz 46%(-1)... RFord 28%(-10)

First it was nice to see Soknacki slightly ahead of Stintz even if it's just a percentage, he has worked hard and him being ahead of Stintz is a nice moral victory.

Chow being a head by 10 is pretty sweet, Tory in a strange spot, he needs Fords supports to jump to him, but Ford is so toxic a Ford endorsement might actually turn off some current Tory voters. He kind of needs Ford supports to go to him on their own. Problem is Ford is so divisive that his supporters might view Tory in a slightly more positive light than Chow but Ford messed up with their minds so bad they probably think Tory is "just as bad" and would vote Ford, even with no chance or just stay home. Listening to Ford nation you don't get the impression there a lot of logical strategy voters in there.

The second part of that poll seems to say that we like Tory best, but the first part says we will vote for Chow.

This is in keeping with the 2007 election when everyone hated the dishonest McGuinty, but still voted for him. Unfortunately for Mr. Tory, history will repeat itself, including the fact that a year after the election, we will be regretting our choices.
 
you mean 2011? Because Ontario didn't seem to regret 2007 too much, they re-elected McGuinty with 1 seat short of a majority again in 2011.

What’s the story when it comes to innovation in Canada?
The story is very much a mixed one. The great heroes of innovation in municipal government in the US have been long-term mayors like Thomas Menino in Boston and Michael Bloomberg in New York. They are both people who care passionately about public policy and who look for solutions that are strongly supported by evidence. All Rob Ford has in common with them is the title “mayor.” He functions solely on the basis of instinct and ideology. Hopefully this year’s municipal election brings in a leader who is not only imaginative but also respects evidence.

I'll never understand that. Elections should be a 31 day process at most.

I think part of the reason our federal and municipal elections are so short is because they can be called at any time by the Governor General or through a confidence vote. Until it's called, we never really know for sure when our next election will be.

In contrast Americans know that they have election every four years. They know years in advanced they exact day the president, governor (or whoever) will be replaced. This predictability means that the politicians and their parties can start fundraising and campaigning far earlier than they would be able to here in Canada.

Now that doesn't explain the long campaigns at the municipal level. Blame for that can be assigned to poor legislation. If we could get the legislature to mandate shorter municipal elections, we'd never have to deal with a long campaign again.
 
Scarborough’s subway hopes just got slightly more remote

Although the Globe is careful to note that the handover isn’t expected to affect the Scarborough subway’s overall construction timeline, the change in leadership is likely to slow down the project’s initial planning phases, which could end up amounting to a death sentence. Two of the major mayoral candidates—Olivia Chow and David Soknacki—have pledged to scrap the subway extension if they’re elected and build a light-rail line instead, as originally planned before subway boosters interceded last year. With no shovels in the ground, cancelling the subway would be especially easy. Bottom line: brace yourselves for a few more years of arguments over Scarborough transit.

It's ridiculously long. These U.S politicians spend more time campaigning and fundraising than actually doing what they're elected to do. Most of those two years are spent just to select the candidate who will lead the party. There's countless televised debates in which you hear the same spiel over and over again, followed by lengthy analysis by pundits and their crapshoot predictions. Once the president finally gets elected, the midterm elections start only 2 years later, for senate and congress. As soon as that's out of the way, the presidential campaigns begin with election day still at least two years away. In fact the media have already been talking about potential presidential candidates for quite a while now (Hillary Clinton bla bla bla). But I couldn't care less about who might be the next president, because they will still be corrupt, nothing will change, and nothing will get done (except going to war). It's toxic.
