Moss Park / Queen & Sherbourne

Wow! Thanks for posting that. I've often walked by this park and thought it was an amazing space. It's one of the larger street parks downtown. Now a coffee shop across from it would be perfect.

I would say the area desperately needs '3rd space' retail along the lines of a welcoming coffee shop, gallery, music bar, etc. As with dynamic countries, dynamic neighbourhoods wield cultural influence and attract 'outsiders' into their spheres. The success of George St. Diner, Cafe 260 and...

I'm not sure, but it was certainly more fun, with 3 top notch jazz clubs within strolling distance and the Terrace roller rink! I remember being charmed that every store around Church and Dundas was named after the owner - Alex's Drycleaning, Benny's Antiques, Peter's Barber Shop, etc.

Art on a Christmas card by Arto Yuzabasiyan. Cold Night, Dundas Street East, 1988. The scene is an east view from what was then the William J. Bullock government building. It captures a tiny bit of the Filmore's sign.

Carlton Cinema is shutting down... and opening back up again

My best Carlton memory was seeing Wild At Heart in September. The air conditioning was broken and the whole experience was indeed hotter than Georgia asphalt. The final line-up of movies is a testament to why it will be missed - Antichrist, Bright Star, Cairo Time, Capitalism: A Love Story...

My building's grapevine has it that Filmore's has been sold, but I can find no reference to it online. I never thought that guy would sell; he just loves being a strip club owner too much. I guess everyone gets older, and everyone has their price. Anyways it'll be a decade at the very least...

what do the toronto people do?

    1. If you live in one of the major central neighbourhoods, High Park, Riverdale, Annex, Yonge St. Subway Line, downtown, etc. etc. etc. you don’t need a car. (For single guys carlessness can be a drag on your dating life however.) 2. I don’t have a car and it is a bit of a bitch when it...

I’ve browsed in Upside Dive a few times and they have nice stuff, but Filter or Commute Home it’s not. There’s another vintage store there – Junky Gems or something? These types of stores have a long history in the area so unfortunately I don’t think this is heralding much. The...

Totally agreed. Other than ‘curing’ mental illness, poverty and drug use outright, dilution is the solution. Yes, Toronto does deserve some praise, particularly for putting affordable rental units on high brow Pears Ave. Agreed also with a few musings of my own - -The School House...

    Colourful characters from the past

I think I was behind the World's Greatest Dancer in line at the Yonge-Dundas AMC a few weeks ago. His name is Raoul??.. Now I wish I had spied on what movie he was catching.

I hope I don't come across as harsh. Living next to Satan House for 2 decades I care a lot about the crackies - April, Scarface, Billy, Albert, et al., and I've made some friends, particularly W- who has me over for dinner all the time and brings me back T-shirts from Ethiopia. But, yes, I...

Pretty much every day for the last 20 years I've thought about what could make the situation better and come up blank. I either joke about it or I'll have to switch hoods. Although there is steady stream of news about people who do beat their demons, http://www.thestar.com/article/690692 , I...
