British influences on Toronto, the city and its culture, that still survive to the present day

This is true. Some bands are sometimes just too English to really make it big in the US unless they score a fluke hit that doesn't sound quite so English (looking at you, Blur) but they fall on more sympathetic ears in Canada for various reasons, including a smaller population & fewer cities to...

British influences on Toronto, the city and its culture, that still survive to the present day

Other bits and pieces in terms of architecture: brutalism seems to have found a foothold here more than in the US, red-brick housing projects like Alexandra Park and along Gerrard remind me of similar developments from the '60s and '70s in the UK, and a handful of buildings done in the 1950s...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

The last time I was pulled over by a cop I asked if I could ask him some questions about the law and what he was writing the citation for. He said sure, so I pulled up the HTA on my phone and suddenly he didn't want to hear anything more and said he'd arrest me if I continued to be a nuisance...

    Rob Ford's Toronto

Yeah, and they thought the Star was losing money when the Star Touch guy lost his job ... PostMedia are circling the drain, Worms has no meal ticket anymore and no one's going to buy SAL's book. No wonder they want to get dirt on the Star.

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

How much DO they usually cost? Per km. Depending on the configuration (what kind of separation, rearranging parking if necessary, etc.).

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

There's the law, and then there's actual police practice. Sure, the HTA says stating your name and address is enough if you are stopped on a bike. And you can offer photo ID of some kind if asked for ID. But a cop will insist on seeing a licence if he thinks you might have one, just to be able...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

Removing parking was the third rail of the entire Ronces reconfiguration discussion a few years back, since apparently there are people who drive to Ronces every week, park right outside the store they patronize and then completely fill the trunk with purchases and they are unable to park...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

I guess when I'm riding somewhere that doesn't have bike lanes (still about 90% of roads in the entire city), I'm still not traffic.

    Rob Ford's Toronto

I think the Big Gulp and the rise of the supersized soft drink in general is all about the perception of value. The illusion of value, more accurately. A big cup is already pretty cheap, but hey, a gargantuan one for just a little more, relatively speaking, seems like a huge bargain, a bulk...

    Rob Ford's Toronto

Just another illustration of why Worms is both unscrupulous and a colossal moron. He somehow knew that his 'friend', the one he had never ever mentioned or interacted with on Twitter before, must have taken her life because of something truly awful and corrupt happening at the Star - you know...

Toronto Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport | ?m | ?s | Ports Toronto | Arup

Anyone else get a call from Environics recently - a survey on attitudes to the island airport?

    Rob Ford's Toronto

Wait, SAL called Ford a buffoon? I know she said ultimately she was disappointed that he didn't deal with his personal problems ... but then again everyone who asked or suggested that Ford step down and take some time to sort out the problems he had that were blatantly obvious but which he...

Is it possible Graeme would have been called to testify?

    Rob Ford's Toronto

Nothing has been determined or investigated yet and here's dopey old Joe crying cover-up and saying he needs to see the suicide note left by his 'friend' Raveena. Who meant so much to him that he never, ever mentioned her before. Maybe things are really rotten at the Star but Joe is just...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

I don't see how Roncesvalles having the bike track go behind the streetcar stop would be a problem. Once TTC riders cross the bike track from the sidewalk to the streetcar platform/island, there's no more conflict between bikes and peds. The lower part of the Sherbourne track was the last to be...

Ridiculous comments and claims made by City Councillors

Yeah, that sort of thing's not creepy or intrusive at all.

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

Even if the projected ridership were higher, I've never really understood why extending the subway further into Scarborough necessarily means tunnelling. It's already mostly at grade or above out there, but I guess for some people it's not really a subway unless it's hidden underground where...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

How the Roncesvalles platforms are supposed to work is that bikes stop when streetcar patrons are getting on and off, i.e., when the streetcar is stopped. However, some cyclists don't stop and some TTC patrons step out into the bike lane to see if a streetcar is coming while bikes are still...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

It's not a laneway, and the purpose of raising it above the level of the road was to separate it from the rest of traffic. However, it's significantly compromised by the ease with which drivers can go on it regardless. Separated bike tracks can be plowed, which encourages winter cycling.
