GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

I went by there last week and it looks like it's already under construction. At least, the site is being cleared. It's the area between Victoria St and the tracks in southeast Whitby, between Blair and Hopkins. Part of the site was formerly Sklar Furniture. (Does this mean that they'll eliminate...

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

Got a reply from YRT about using Presto for a YRT 3-zone fare:

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

In other Presto news, on September 2nd, YRT is taking over the Sutton GO bus (route 69), and replacing it with an extension of YRT Route 50 "Queensway". This particular GO route had been accepting YRT fares within York region. I'd been paying with YRT tickets, as it was impossible to pay a YRT...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Yes, notices went up on all the official bus stops on the route on Thursday. I use the route fairly frequently to go to and from Sutton. It's always been an odd duck of a route, being a GO bus that took YRT fares within York Region and acted as a local YRT bus there. There was no other YRT...

    Toronto Union Pearson Express | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | MMM Group Limited

Wasn't there a plan to jack up the Brampton station building and move it ten or twenty metres north? It looks like they could lay a third track on the north side then... I'm not sure there is the room on the south side, what with the bus station and all. Edit: and, looking at the overpasses...

    New LRT Q&A Thread

Indeed. I guess better control of relative height and distance between a railed vehicle and the stop surface allows this.

    New LRT Q&A Thread

If the ramps are anything like the ones on the Viva buses, the driver also has to watch that the ramp doesn't hit anyone when flipping out or in. The driver also helps the passenger park and secure their wheelchair or scooter.

    European traffic signs in Toronto

Here's an example of the European-style direction sign at Ira Needles Blvd and Victoria St on the west side of K-W. A little south, we can see the North American-style lane-guidance signs (black with white arrows). The diagram sign has European arrows though.

    European traffic signs in Toronto

I've noticed the occasional UK-style sign near roundabouts. Sometimes the arrows on the diagram-like sign showing which road goes where will be UK-style instead of North American-style; sometimes there will be a UK-style direction sign. I get the impression that this occurs where there is no...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

I think that was the pre-existing footbridge across Burnhamthorpe. It appears to have been placed on a temporary support and then disconnected while they built the new entrance to the car park into the slope on the north side of Burnhamthorpe.

GO Transit: Union Station Shed Replacement & Track Upgrades (Zeidler)

I read somewhere, perhaps here, that the original design for the Bush trainshed involved glass roof panels, and they only went to the wood/tar/whatever roof to cut costs. Is this true?

    Toronto Queens Quay & Water's Edge Revitalization | ?m | ?s | Waterfront Toronto

Arrggh. The Cherry Street line is supposed to be connected to QQ East, right? So much for a coherent network... That's one thing that bugs me about transit in the GTA: we seem to miss so many opportunities for making network connections.

Yeah, what's happening with that? Couldn't they combine some of the work?

Roads: Increase Ontario 400-series Highway Speed Limit

I remember driving 120 on the 407 and being the second-slowest thing on the road... I too think we should have a 120-km/h limit on the freeways, and maybe 100 on rural two-lane highways away from congested areas with lots of driveways. I'm not the only one who thinks so... was it Jim Kenzie in...

Toronto Union Subway Station: Second Platform and Concourse Improvements | ?m | ?s | TTC | Arcadis

What I don't understand is, why use discrete columns instead of just making the whole wall thicker? Seems like a lot of extra fuss-work. Did they need to maintain refuge spaces on the north side?

    YRT 2011-2012 strike

So has anyone else been back on YRT now that the strike seems to be ending? There were notices at major bus stops saying that service is free until the end of March. I rode from Sutton to Finch and back today without paying a dime. :)

Or bite the bullet and finish changing to SI. This in-between state sucks.

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

I've said this before: disabling attempts to load money into the card--attempts to correct problems--is generally not a good idea. I suspect that somewhere in the planning process, someone said, "...and when the card goes into negative balance, it gets locked so that the holder can't use it...
