News on retail chains (was: New Mall Retail)

Sure, the Foodcourt is dated, but it doesn't need only upscale restaurants there. I'm not sure why, but every place I've eaten at Sherway is better than at other malls (like the Carribbean Queen at Sherway, compared to other malls).. The food itself is good and it's ALWAYS a full house at...

    Mississauga (non-mall) Retail

Fair enough.. I didn't realize they were both at the tops of their caps - upon checking I see that to be the truth. For that money, they both definetly suck though!!

    Mississauga (non-mall) Retail

Quite true, but it seemed that the Teachers Union (Cadillac Fairview) wasn't all too willing to invest in the mall which is obviously key to renovating it... I suppose they may have been too busy doing up Eaton Centre. Also keep in mind that the Teachers Union owns Maple Leafs Sports and...

So the only Mississauga Zellers locations in the 90's were Westwood, Westdale and Dixie @ Dundas? And what about Brampton? Back in the 90's was there even one Zellers there? Because Shoppers World was a Kmart and Bramalea was Eatons and the Trinity Common one hadn't been built yet.

    Dead/Decaying Malls of Greater Toronto

I agree.. I think the old location where Rogers Video was, is the main empty space. But the problem is (IMO) the lack of "major" retailers. Whether it just be an EBgames, or a Footlocker. There are stores there, but not stores many of us want to shop in!

Toronto non-mall retail (Odds & Ends)

There's space there for a Walmart? Where? At that Price Chopper/FreshCo plaza?

News on retail chains (was: New Mall Retail)

Ya know Adma, by your logic (that 'colored people' have ruined the GTA malls), Bramalea City Centre should be long dead.. Instead it's thriving and expanding.. While Sheridan Centre on the other hand (in an area with more "not colored" people) is instead on life support. Care to explain...

Yes, because we all know "colored" people don't buy clothes, right? I think Mr Coruscanti hit the nail on the head.. Today, two days after Boxing Day, it took me nearly 15 minutes to find a space at Erin Mills. So the people do show up.. But do they show up the rest of the...

This only depends on the area you look in.. While Rexdale will have less well off people (of all colors), most people (again of all colors) in the Erin Mills area are well to do.. Every big house that's worth 800K plus down my street either has people of Arab, or East Asian decent. And the...

Sorry, but do you mean that when Erin Mills Town Centre was made, they didn't realize that "colored" people would be the majority in the Erin Mills area? And the fact that "colored" people out number the "non-colored" people helps plauge the mall??

Only because those two malls are "high class".. Bring in a Banana Republic and a Holt Renfrew - along with a nice reno and I think that's all it takes.

I don't think they really need to do much for the layout.. As you said, it's design is what it is.. I would say half of the Erin Mills area is very afluent (all those million dollar homes across the mall), so just renovate the mall, but do so with high quality finishes. Make it as classy as...

It's overdue for an update. Keep the clock, but change any thing ya want outside.. The entrances are very dated, and show their age. As of course does the flooring and the poor interior lighting. The stores are great, but (especially after sunset) the mall is dark and gloomy inside.

The Ontario Pension board eh? They're loaded (16 billion in assets). So as you say, hopefully a nice 'spruce-up' of the mall is due in the new year.

News on retail chains (was: New Mall Retail)

A new site for EMTC seems to have shown up.. It mimics the old one, but it is a new site. The contact people seem to be the same, but the email addresses show a company called 20Vic. They have their porfolio here: http://20vic.com/retail.html I guess they own/manage the Pickering Town...

Is it really (financially/physically) viable to add a second floor to the existing mall like that? Has it ever been done before?

    Bramalea City Centre

Yes, I believe Trinity Common (410 at Bovaird) is owned by RioCan, which is 100 times better than Shoppers World..

    Bramalea City Centre

You must have some rich friends :D You could be right about the Erin Mills Development part.. I'm not even sure what they're up to these days, as the Erin Mills area is 98% built up now.. Down in Guelph, the Stone Road Mall is half owned by Oxford, and half owned by Primaris..

    Bramalea City Centre

Where did you hear that EMTC is up for sale? The friend of a friend knows someone at Cadilac.. and they were talking about doing the planning work on a reno.. didn't mention anything about a timeline, but I can't imagine it being too far away from next year..

    Bramalea City Centre

Indeed.. Woodbine was so dead the last time I was there, it was strange.. And the Bay 'Outlet' looked like the Salvation Army warehouse. The EMTC just needs a nice makeover.. which is rumoured to be starting next year.
