Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

What are the dates on those two pics? Mustapha, thanks for the continuing series on hot wire on wire action ;) Oh yeah, and the whole rest of this thread!

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

No wonder I get nostalgic. I was actually alive in 1982 (albeit 1)! When did they stop being such a part of the city? Btw, it's not so much the wires as the posts and wires together. I don't know what it is but the only times I went downtown (where these kinds of wires appeared more...

A bit off topic.... Even though I'm 30, when I see the mishmash of huge electrical posts with 5 branches making a mess of the sky in the old pictures I get a twinge of nostalgia. I think that despite the messiness, it's got its own beauty and the clean look of today is a bit too... antiseptic...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Sorry for bringing up a really old post but I only check this thread every few months. Anyhow, is it just me or was the ground lower back then? Or maybe everyone was really short?

Ha. Whitby looks pretty identical to today. Then again, so does Bracebridge (in 1910).

I bet a color photo of that "then" Morningside pic taken in 1950 would look nearly identical

I just drove by there yesterday! I never drive down the Danforth but I had something to do and I drove right by that building and immediately thought of this thread. Looks nothing like a theater on the inside, but kudos to preserving the outdoor facade

I love the half house! That's hilarious!

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

I love that third picture! Aside from the cars and fashions, the "Then" picture almost looks more modern than the "Now" one!

When did that area of town become the red light district of Toronto? In the 1930s, it looked like such a respectable neighborhood

That church sure has undergone quite a change

That's what I meant. The cornice is gone. I knew it was the same building :p

Thanks for the discussion regarding my query, very illuminating! Re: Peter St looking south..... there's a quite blatant example of the old being better. That building at the back left with the raised middle is beautiful. Also, the second building on the right with the thing on the roof...

Sweet, I'd love to see that! Another question: In a lot of the old photos, I can't see a bleeding street sign anywhere? How'd the old-timey Torontonians know what street they were on? Obviously, the pace of traffic was much slower, but still!

Is the first city hall still around?

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Long time lurker, here! That's an eery picture. I worked at Bay and Richmond from 2007-2009 (I'm fairly young) and recognized that intersection immediately. It's changed very little (even though that building on the NW corner is either gone or drastically renovated). I worked in the building on...
