Dupont Street is one of Toronto's more unique stretches of road. Paralleling the CP rail corridor just to its south through the centre of the city, Dupont long marked the northern edge of residential neighbourhoods, while industrial or commercial buildings were the prevailing land use on the north side of the road. With industry generally moving to the 'burbs for larger footprints over recent decades, and with the value of land skyrocketing, the north side of Dupont has been transforming of late with a series of mid-rise condos replacing the earlier uses.

One of the projects currently rising along Dupont is putting the definite article in front of the street name; Tridel's The Dupont is replacing a former Sobeys grocery store and its surface parking lot with a mixed-use, mostly residential condominium of 9 storeys. Designed by Turner Fleischer Architects, the building is F-shaped, with the vertical stroke aligned east-west, and will rise 36.55m high. Addressed to 840 Dupont, the building is rising immediately west of Shaw Street.

The Sobeys store shuttered in 2021 and was demolished and cleared from the site in 2022. Excavation began in 2022 and continued into 2023 when the first and then second cranes were raised. By November 2023, as seen below, concrete columns of the building's double-height first floor were rising above the hoarding.

By the Spring of 2024, the building's layout was becoming more pronounced as the two arms that reach south to Dupont Street began growing taller above the thick concrete transfer slab that tops the ground level. The Dupont's interface with the bulk of both Dupont and Shaw streets is to be lined with shops and food service providers, with up to seventeen commercial outlets in total, depending on how much space commercial tenants look for in the building.

Over the last several months, the building has grown to its full nine storeys and the structural elements are now all but complete. Cladding panels are now being applied to its exterior, with a mix of dark brown brick-faced precast panels making up with bulk while white precast panels are being used to articulate and visually lighten the massing. Along the ground floor, the steel frames of canopies that will shelter pedestrian sfrom inclement weather can be seen projecting out over the sidewalk.

Once complete, The Dupont will also boast green roofs and amenity terraces, while in its southwest corner a new shop-lined parkette will face Dupont Street The Dupont is targeted for opening in 2025.
