Thanks very much for the pictures. Quite an improvement from the days of Consumers Distributing even though I do miss having an unlimited supply of free stubby pencils around.

If we charge we should offer discounts for people who can prove they are wearing a suit purchased at the store.

(capitalization added as I can't seem to bold from my tablet) I can't help but feel there is a slight tendency in some posts, advertent or not, to not fully incorporate into the analysis the fact that people do not have great confidence in the City's method of determining what should be...

    Toronto The One | 328.4m | 91s | Mizrahi Developments | Foster + Partners

I take your point. I think there is much in what you say though being a major cultural reference point surely isn't necessary to save a building from demo on heritage grounds. Anyway, I think that most people unhappy with the designation and preservation regime would not want to comb through...

    Toronto The One | 328.4m | 91s | Mizrahi Developments | Foster + Partners

This is as much a general reaction than a specific reply to one person. I agree that a knee-jerk reaction that everything old should be kept would not be noble. On the other hand, a general disposition towards viewing older buildings as generally inherently more difficult to recreate, and...

That wouldn't even be so bad. I bet what actually happened was the person, who was absolutely and undoubetdly chosen on...umm...ahh...merit, was paid quite handsomely.

That is very much my sentiment too. We have so few buildings dating from that time it does seem a shame to lose it completely. I feel about the same as I would about the Albert Britney book store building 50m north of it. Not worth keeping in place if it stops a beautiful 80 storey building...

As usual I agree with you on most points. I can think of many places within city boundaries that tall buildings aren't appropriate. The question, as always, is where are those places. Also, it would be possible to say the SW corner site at Y&B, as constituted, is too small for a tall...

I know others feel that way too. I am just worried about placing constraints on the city's growth, especially downtown, because the planners think something will look neat. This could very easily limit potential growth and densities which I see as crucial to Toronto's success. Would it be so...

The "opposite of crap" would seem to be somewhat of an opaque concept given what gets built in Toronto. I have never blamed the planning department for poor building quality or unimaginative designs, but I doubt most people would say everything they have touched is the "opposite of crap." This...

    Toronto YC Condos -- Yonge at College | 198.42m | 62s | Canderel | Graziani + Corazza

That is quite an emphatically stated statement. I just think they could have tried for a bit more. I agree that by local standards it was not timid, but for me that is the problem. As I said, though, the comment is meant as a miniscule encouragement for any developers who might read it. There...

Just in case they are following it I'll say that I don't mind the look. I just wish they wouldn't have been so timid with the height and number of units.

I think that for a lot of people to say the concern is primarily gentrification would be to misperceive, or at least misdescribe, their concerns. I take the two posts that immediately preceded yours to be, at least in part, two cases in point. The concern there is as much to do with...

    Toronto 1 Eglinton East | 211.25m | 65s | Davpart | Hariri Pontarini

Should have gone for an Aura-like 75 storeys and be a real anchor visible from downtown. Either way I can hear the hatchets and tomahawks down at city hall being sharpened already so maybe they are just being realistic.

I agree with others that 17 would be a ludicrous outcome. I wish they had been more ambitious in the first place and gone for 50.

As usual I agree with most of what you have to say. I would note freshcutgtrass’s post and say we shouldn’t let any level of government off the hook if they are failing to invest as they should. I am sorry but I did try to understand and I have no idea what you mean. This seems to...

    Toronto The Gloucester on Yonge | 147.82m | 44s | Concord Adex | a—A

I was referring to restricting heights in downtown locations such as this one and how arbitrary it turns out to be. There was an earlier discussion on the topic with people on both sides considering the merits and demerits of limiting building heights downtown. It seems these days we have the...

Any good news on this front or does oppression still reign?

What is Toronto's current population? (Yes, I Googled)

Interesting point, thanks. Thanks also for being the first to address the main question. I was starting to regret leaving the high rise section. Finally, for the record, according to the article linked to Chicago has, at least short term, already reversed its population decline by adding 10k...

What is Toronto's current population? (Yes, I Googled)

Yes, waiting until 2017 to get the 2016 census results will be more accurate than estimates. I, and presumably some others, however, still find value in the intervening estimates emanating from credible sources.
