    VIA Rail

We are sitting at around 40 million. Sadly, when it comes to infrastructure we set the bar way to high to do anything. They are still building new freeways in the GTA with only 4 lanes. If we were doing what you speak of, no freeway within 100km of the CN Tower would be less than 6. How would...

    VIA Rail

I know. It is due to lake of desire to compete with air travel. Imagine not having to go through all the security that is needed to fly just to travel a reasonable distance within Canada?

    VIA Rail

And this is where I want to rant on how the government should not care of that. However, I also know that unless they also are going to subsidize airlines, we would have none of that either. It is a catch 22. If we had great intercity rail that allowed you to get a reasonable distance fast...

I agree, HFR needs to be completely separated from any freight operations. With the plan of using the Havelock sub in ON,it sounds like it will be once they are past the Agincourt Yard. Rocky Mountaineer is not a transportation company, but a tourist company. Because of that, they can be slow...

Thank you for that. I knew Toronto was a working port, but I never envisioned so much railway infrastructure along the shore.

Not sure how you get the hatred of passengers. I hate empty trains.Empty trains are a problem that should be prevented. I want all trains to be full all the time. Maybe not standby/being bumped, like planes, but full enough that the fare paid covers the cost of that train.

    What is that history?

    VIA Rail

I want all trains to be full. Hard to do that if it cannot stay on time or be fast enough to use. Imagine if all Corridor trains were at least an hour late and took twice as long as they currently do to do a run. That is the reality that outside of the Corridor can be.

    VIA Rail

Which is why nothing will change. The government and Via cannot push for that, and, like you say, even if they did, CN would make it even worse financially. Reality is, not much will change until the government is willing to go head to head with the 2 rail giants. And that is even more of a...

    VIA Rail

Considering that highway posted speed limits are no faster than 120 km/hr or 75 mph, if the trains could maintain 60 mph once it leave the station and only stop to pick up or drop off passengers, it would greatly improve the competitiveness of Via. Even if they did that to the existing number of...

    VIA Rail

The problem is not Via.The problem is CN and the way they fit them in their system. A simple fine system that would cost CN more to let Via run late would be a good start. Reality is, outside of the Corridor, Via has no desire to take any share of cars or planes.

    VIA Rail

Outside of the Corridor, Via cannot compete with other modes of transportation. Along the Corridor, the time difference isn't that bad.

I could drive between Halifax and Toronto in 20 hours. Just the section from Montreal to Halifax will take a full day. https://www.viarail.ca/en/plan/train-schedules/montreal-halifax

I don't think any part of the LDS routes are faster by train than car. Part of that is the padding to keep it on time, and part of is is the need to side it due to freight movements. You would think that isn't a problem as it is directional running in that section.

That is where all the politicking comes into play.

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

I would assume that the process for any community wanting federal funding for transit would be the same. By having a small town in the middle of nowhere have the same portal that the largest city i the city has feels more fair. So, whether it be a community bus or a subway, the funding can be...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

With the mess of the LCBO right now,I do not see Ford taking on the Corridor routes.

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

GO is really good at one thing - commuter rail. Look across the country, or even throughout North America, GO does the best among all of the commuter rail services out there. Parts of LIRR are good as they run 24/7, Other than that, GO is top of the list or close to the top when it comes to...

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

The question is, what can he cut and still get enough votes? The other thing is, what will he omit in his platform to get voted in? Mind you, Harper did well with transit funding.
