What prevents us from adopting a distance-based subway fare system?

so i'm taking from this thread that one could either charge by distance travelled, charge on the basis of entering/existing zones, or price different routes differently given that a bus/subway/streetcar never runs half a route. well, except short-turned streetcars. and further, each of these...

    Rob Ford's Toronto

The specificity of the Deputy Mayor's language is also telling, emphasis mine. “I believe there is nothing to that claim,” said Holyday, chair of the city’s labour relations committee. “I know for a fact that Rob Ford personally hasn’t interviewed anybody.”

    TTC: Sheppard Subway Expansion (Speculative)

Transit City spoke of a Jane LRT, and a Etobicoke-Finch West LRT. Any thoughts on the merits of those versus extending the Sheppard westward and closing the loop?

Exisisting Urban Rail Lines for Subway and LRT Use.

Neat! Is anyone able to map that against population densities in Toronto? If someone can put the rail links in a file somewhere, I can try to bring it into my GIS.

Should the Toronto Islands be kept as-is?

You'd be surprised at the power and weight of words on policy/program/political circles, let alone marketing. Maybe the discussion should explicitly be about 'improving' the island, and not 'developing'. Bringing in more programming to the island sounds like its the underlying issue here...

Should the Toronto Islands be kept as-is?

It sounds like you're essentially speaking to programming the island more effectively in order to make it a year-round, repeat destination. If centre island is indeed used with impressive numbers during the summer months, then it can't be doing too badly. The issue then, it sounds like, is...

Should the Toronto Islands be kept as-is?

anyone have any idea if the ferry service could be absorbed into the ttc/metrolinx? thoughts on what the institutional/regulatory constraints/hurdles be? presto might be a good way to make the ferry piece seamless. (sorry nick., asked more questions, hope you don't mind).

Is gentrification really a good thing?

it is probably more technically accurate to characterise it as creating a new social fabric in the neighbourhood. neighbourhoods are not static - they change. the issue is whether the change observed is desirable, hence the values that we attach to the term 'gentrification'. and if it is not...

Only Pricing Congestion Can Stop Congestion

I think this is a very important distinction touched upon by gweed123. Pricing to deal with congestion, and pricing to deal with raising revenue for delivering a service (i.e. transit) can often be two very different things. Taxing gas is administratively easy. It, however, is a blunt...
