    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Presumably because 1/3rd of traffic from the 410 exits to the 401.

    Transit Fantasy Maps

Nice map, I think it could be a great in-vehicle map for those routes (in addition to some normal subway or full system maps). How do you feel about including an arrow for the Eglinton LRT leaving from Kennedy?

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

In Bordeaux they use ground level supply through historic districts to avoid unsightly catenary. There are two problems with it though; it is much more expensive (both the infrastructure and the trams require two modes of pick-up) and reliability is not 100% mostly due to water problems. But I...

Star: Would a bridge at Dundas and Spadina save lives?

I love the buses with poles that are supposed to be streetcars in the drawing. I agree that the city already has the tools to 'solve' this intersection. Turn restrictions and scramble crossings. Streetcar stop islands would be useful too, but there's really no room on Dundas for those.

    Move Toronto: The SOS Plan

If we're more concerned with what our subway map looks like instead of how easy it is to get around the city then we will be headed for more mediocrity. My comments regarding the plan: I'm not sure why there is a Sheppard LRT running out from Agincourt. There isn't much density along that...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Who can argue with the 448? Surely the bottom half of the DVP can handle a whole highway worth of traffic being dumped into it.

Roads: Keep the Gardiner, fix it, or get rid of it? (2005-2014)

Nobody would bother climbing up there? I think the Highline in NY and the promenade plantee in Paris proves thats not true. Sure this isn't Manhattan, but its getting pretty close down there. People would climb up there simply because it would be a unique space where you could walk across the...

TTC: Automatic Train Control and Subway Platform Screen Doors

I don't think he said that he didn't care if someone commits suicide. He said that the mandate of the TTC is to move people, not to prevent suicides. And he's correct; platform barriers will limit disruptions to service from a variety of factors, including suicides. Its a win-win, unless...

The Case for LRT "Made in Hamilton"

Hamilton's system can be a good showcase of LRT. Actually, Hamilton was chosen for the ICTS demonstration line because of its ability to showcase the possibilities of the technology. The route had an urban component, a suburban component, and most importantly a very challenging topography...

    Bathurst Streetcar

Lets do the math: Jarvis to Bathurst is about 2.5km. With three routes (I'll assume there is a reason for excluding Dundas) thats 7.5km of tunnel. 7.5km of DRL would be from Pape down to the core and across to Bathurst (more or less, depending on alignment). That would be something like...

Whose vision of transit in Toronto do you support?

Scarberian I really don't think it helps your case to call me 'amusingly ignorant'. Anyway, I disagree about the "situation on the ground" as you call it. Mississauga Transit and GO have put a lot of resources into making Square One a major hub for local and regional transit service. An...

Whose vision of transit in Toronto do you support?

Yes, I should look at the TTC rapid transit map which clearly shows the network extending one stop beyond major subcentres at each end (except Spadina, which is being extended to one-arguably). This is good planning. Serve the major centres with a stop, then extend a bit further past the centre...

Whose vision of transit in Toronto do you support?

How's that? It follows the pattern of our subway system, which is to extend out from downtown and end at the major suburban subcentres (Etobicoke, North York, and Scarborough Centres). This makes perfect sense, as people are commuting to these subcentres from downtown and the suburbs. I...

    TTC Museum / Visitor Centre

I've been to both the London and NY transit museums. New York's really stands out for being in an abandoned subway station. The entrance is down through a classic hole in the street subway entrance. The artifacts and displays are all on the concourse level, and at platform level they have a...

Plans to fill in Allen Road

Even if we wanted to slam the Allen further into the city, it would be virtually impossible. It would require huge amounts of money for very little gain, and massive disruption to the neighbourhoods, including (at least temporary) loss of a ravine and a fair bit of expropriation. It would...

Plans to fill in Allen Road

The original plans for the Spadina exprewwsay show a partial interchange at Bathurst (basically northbound to northbound, and southbound to southbound). The earliest plans also a subway station there. It was planned to run at grade, along with the subway and the width of the whole thing...

Rail: Ontario-Quebec High Speed Rail Study

Buffalo and Detroit are both important airports for niagara and southwestern Ontario respectively. I think the ideal would be to have US pre-clearance at Toronto, Hamilton, London at least for American trains from Chicago or New York to extend up to Toronto. Additionally Buffalo, Detroit...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Any word on using the LIUNA station in Hamilton? It would make a great station, but I fear they won't be willing to spend money to buy and renovate it, and we'll end up with a couple cheap platforms with some glass shelter.

Brampton GO Station: Proposed Development (if you hate GO surface lots...)

A hotel and conference centre would have to be quite large to take up all of that parking lot. Of course it will have some useless 'park' or other contrived public space, but there should be room for a small parking structure to hold a few hundred cars. If the station loses some parking, it...

How small can condo units in Toronto get?

I think those are great. Some people really don't need and/or can't afford much space. I lived for 6 months in a 190 sq.ft. apartment, and I loved it. Its easy to sacrifice living space when you're young and want to live in a neighbourhood thats normally beyond your means.
