    Toronto Casa | 147.52m | 46s | Cresford | a—A

Oh my god. 366 sq. ft.? That's the smallest I've seen yet. Can you imagine trying to live in that?

    American Accents of Toronto

...or further confusion. There are a number of claims/assertions that I would diagree with. In particular, the section on slang focuses oddly on a very specific social dialect which is not at all representative of the Toronto dialect. Not very helpful. (Note that the page carries a request...

    American Accents of Toronto

Canadian is "neutral", but only for North America. Proof is seen in the fact that Canadians are sought after as tv news anchors. Look at how many prominent tv reporters/anchors are Canadian.

    American Accents of Toronto

BTW - Canadian English is probably the most uniform dialect of English in the world. Also, English has 12 vowels, but most dialects of Canadian English only have 11. Some American dialects are losing the 12th vowel as well. So if anything, you could say some Americans sound like us - not the...

    American Accents of Toronto

This illustrates the problem with the test. It relies on you to be able to detect the differences between your vowels. It can take a trained ear a long time to be able to distinguish the sounds and know what the actual vowel qualities are. I'm guessing some of you are getting the wrong...

    World's First, Building in Motion

Residents may get fresh view from rotating towers First Dubai, then Moscow – could Toronto be the next city to get a revolving tower? July 19, 2008 Pat Brennan SPECIAL TO THE STAR Toronto may someday have a highrise condominium tower where each floor rotates to give its residents a...

    What's your Walk Score?

That was fun. Radio City gets 93. Never mind Pusateri's or Dominion - apparently my nearest grocery store is "Trung Nguyen Coffee" on McGill St. I'll have to look into that one. Also, nearest parks are Cawtha Square and Allan Gardens, although there are five inns or B&Bs listed ahead of...

New Orleans - a lost accent?

"Cajun French" is no less "genuine" than any other dialect. It's just different. Accents are a relative phenomenon, so everyone has an accent. You just don't notice it until you venture outside your language community, or a visitor remarks on it.

Atlanta jaunt (and bonus Toronto-by-air shots)

Thanks for sharing! Nice photos. My favourite is the fire hydrant in the middle of the sidewalk behind the aquarium. And in the photo taken from behind the statue, why is the "do not enter" sign upside down? Nice Spacing article too!

    Pre-Construction condo without agent?

I was interested in a pre-construction unit, and quickly found an agent (recommended by two friends). As a buyer, it cost me nothing, but it gave me peace of mind. The agent handled everything, advising me on the project, the unit, upgrades, etc. She made sure everything was in order and that...

MacLean's: How Canada stole the American Dream

This whole debate reminds me of the reaction to Sicko (yes, I've made this point before, but it's relevant). When Canadian journalists - the only media to react negatively - dogged Michael Moore for protraying Canada's health system in too positive a light, he asked if they wanted to trade...

    rogers, city news & iphones

Thanks for posting this thread. And I thought I was the only one who was annoyed. Plus - what's with the people who feel they need to camp out overnight so they can be the first to buy one?

New Orleans - a lost accent?

Interesting. I find it strange, though, that in the sound clip they dwell on the accent being non-rhotic (missing the consonant 'r', particularly at the ends of words). Many American accents are non-rhotic, particularly along the east coast.

MacLean's: How Canada stole the American Dream

This is the oft-used American argument (particularly after we refused to invade Iraq), as if we ought to be grateful that we are being "protected". Modern reality is very different. The idea that someone is going to invade us and that we need a military to prevent it, or that the US is...

MacLean's: How Canada stole the American Dream

Special Canada Day Report: How Canada stole the American Dream The numbers are in. Compared to the U.S., we work less, live longer, enjoy better health and have more sex. And get this: now we're wealthier too. http://www.macleans.ca/canada/national/article.jsp?content=20080625_50113_50113...

Woman spends 24 hours waiting for doctor, dies in NY hospital

Regardless of how you feel about Michael Moore, there is a lot about the US health care system's problems that cannot be denied. It was Canadian journalists who felt Sicko was painting the Canadian system in too good a light. They challenged him on it, until he asked them if they wanted to...

Finding a Place for A Student

My boss has rented out his basement to students for years. Not sure of the rent, but well under $1,000 I think. I agree that one of the best methods is to walk around the area, looking for "for rent" signs. Try also south of the Annex (my boss' neighbourhood): Bathurst - Spadina, north of...

Buying a Parking Spot with Condo a necessity?

I agree with most of the comments here, except I think the urgency to have one for resale value is overstated. When I bought, I looked mostly at resale units without parking spots, and the one I eventually chose was not on the market a long time. I don't have a car, don't even find a need...

How to stop dummies from driving on the raised TTC ROWs?

No matter what safety or preventive measures you take, somebody is going to figure out a way to defeat them - even if unintentionally. Don't underestimate people. That said, even if you are unfamiliar with the city and the intersection, and you drive up on the ROW, I don't see how you can...
