Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

I really like the fact that we can see the shadow of the photographer in the lower right corner.

    Spring Garden PlaygroundWillowdale

My father was one of the tradesmen involved in the construction of the playground. I recall playing on it before it had officially been opened. I recall that tires were later added to both sides of the bridge. It was a safety measure.

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

As do I. I was reminiscing about just that on Saturday as I went into the Food Building after the TFC v Real Salt Lake match.

    Lost Toronto Hotels

That is terrific news. I unreservedly withdraw my cynical comment of above. db

Is that right? Wow! Well I suppose that if St. James Cathedral can pave over much of its old burying ground with the bones of its parishioners now located six feet under a parking lot, it should be no surprise that Little Trinity couldn't care less about that historic structure.

I think it was actually "Sam The Chinese Food Man".

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Funny. I only noticed the nicely repaved Mt. Pleasant the other day. It only took two decades or so for them to finally get around to cleaning that up. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the loop was shut down when the TTC moved to its new longer street cars meaning that it was...

    Evocative Images of Lost Toronto

It can't be 1929! That really is a great photograph. To quibble ever so slightly, it can't be 1929 as the southern extension and tower of the Whitney Block at Queen's Park has already been completed in this shot. They were built between 1931 and 1933 the original portion of the structure...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Thanks. I was curious about that and was going to look it up. It doesn't really compare with the original (or even the modern imitation).

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

I recall swimming in the old "Memorial" pool and picking up 16mm projectors and films from the North York Public Library, both now where the North York Civic Centre now sits. A friend, knowing my interest in Russian history, took me into York Cemetery several years ago to show me the grave...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

It's closed to the general public as it is in restricted space. It's not even covered in the tours as they don't go down to the tunnel. If you know somebody who works in the WB or the Pink Palace, you could arrange a visit I'm sure. db

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

I miss that old sign. It was always such a treat as a kid to be taken the few blocks from Greenfield up to Elmwood to visit the Dairy Queen. I still live in the neighbourhood and it really is nice that something from my childhood still exists there. I actually live on Elmwood now. db

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

There are reduced size copies of the restored panoramics in the tunnel that connects the Whitney Block to the main legislative building.

    Lost Neighbourhood: Blondin Avenue

It sure is. I first read about the crash site issue a few years ago and was absolutely horrified. This area should be gone over with a fine tooth comb in an attempt to gather all human remains at the site. It's just not right that this is the case. This isn't a battlefield at Stalingrad...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Ya no kidding. It absolutely stinks down there but until I now, I had no idea what the cause was. Thanks for that information and many thanks for the PDF!
