Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

This is the bike lane equivalent of “Won’t someone please think of the children?” Somehow when a bike lane goes in, there’s always a hospital, fire station or emergency nearby that will have its access impaired. That’s despite the fact that car congestion will overwhelmingly impede emergency...

    Toronto 41-45 Spadina Road | 55.5m | 15s | ProWinko | a—A

I’m not convinced by the points on FSI or that heights should trend downwards North of Bloor. But, there may be points I’m not seeing - so, happy to learn. BUT, I totally buy that the existing design does render the current units unlivable, and this seems really unworkable financially. Which...

Toronto Toronto Island Park Master Plan | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto

Jokes aside, I think it’s sad that the city isn’t looking like it’s going to spend here. I ‘get’ it given the budget pressures - but if there was ever a special place that you should go all-out on, it’s the Islands. It’s uniquely Toronto; it should be celebrated, and we certainly shouldn’t...

I felt a great disturbance. Can it be that you too are being worn down? :)

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

I think the TTC just values them more. My perception is that TTC management cares (in order) about subways, buses and last of all, streetcars. I thought it darkly amusing that Leary touted his achievements in surface ops just as we were seeing massive shutdowns of streetcar service, scathing...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

I feel like lackluster signal priority, cars wandering onto tracks and left turns are more pressing concerns than its potential long-run capacity, no? Let alone the fact that it’s been in construction forever and still isn’t ready for use.

    Toronto Lower Don Lands Redevelopment | ?m | ?s | Waterfront Toronto

That’s a very good point, and I should have noticed that. Honestly, my issue is that there is this…doctrinairism…around maximum streetwall height that I truly find off-putting. I don’t think it’s as ‘settled science’ as it’s made out to be. It’s subjective - and I’m actually totally ok if it’s...

    Toronto Lower Don Lands Redevelopment | ?m | ?s | Waterfront Toronto

City-owned space in NYC would be fence to fence. So, that’s second number. Only in Philadelphia and Boston have I seen 3s/4s built straight up to the city line without a front yard. In these neighborhoods it would be incredibly unusual unless it was a small apartment building. I believe 4s are...

    Toronto Lower Don Lands Redevelopment | ?m | ?s | Waterfront Toronto

Philadelphia is quite interesting, because you get a more extreme case of what you see in New York. Even narrower streets, narrow row homes and often the ability to build up to 4s without issues. That said, often the sidewalks can be cramped and you have comparatively fewer trees.

    Toronto Lower Don Lands Redevelopment | ?m | ?s | Waterfront Toronto

I was in Beacon Hill recently, so I was amused that you happened to choose a few examples from there. Indeed - in a lot of cities with intact, circa 1700-era neighbourhoods (Boston, Philadelphia are the two I'm familiar with) you'll get narrow streets, narrow sidewalks and 2-3 storey high...

    Toronto The One | 328.4m | 91s | Mizrahi Developments | Foster + Partners

It’s truly unfortunate that Toronto does not have a lot, or high-quality street trees. It’s trying, but - a long way to go.
