Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

I imagine part of the compromise here between the Region and MTO (or whoever) is that ION signals are clearly separate and train-related, rather than placed in the same housing as regular traffic signals (like in the handbook example), where they could be more easily confused.

    VIA Rail

Added to this, frequency really matters especially when given the general unreliability of the network. Miss your connecting train and there might actually be a chance at getting on the next one same day. It also makes a big difference for people who have 1hr+ journeys just to get to and from a...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Absolutely, this would be life changing for me as well. I take weekend trips to Guelph regularly and having an early evening westbound would be phenomenal on Sundays as Via is not very financially viable to take one stop, and Greyhound has a puzzling service gap in the evening, and only resumes...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

While small, the mid afternoon trip stopping at Bloor GO makes a big difference for some, eg taking line 2. Though as someone who occasionally visits the west end of Toronto from further west, I think it'll really require an operational Mt Dennis station and Crosstown as well to really chip into...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

Yeah, my takeaway is that the southern half of the line was fine and the delay seemed to be pretty brief. Like with the Remembrance Day event, I get the impression that they are consciously trying to learn from events that happen, which is what will be important in the future.

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

I get the impression this is all a result of CN not wanting to play ball. It's clear that all the other planning that's been done, from the bridge design to the LRT routing, was around the idea of a King/Victoria transit hub that extended as far as Duke, not a ... Victoria/Duke transit hub that...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

I support this action 100%. This kind of stuff is the only way free transit will eventually become a reality.

    VIA Rail

What's your definition of intercity? There are plenty of small towns on Via routes.

    Toronto Union Pearson Express | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | MMM Group Limited

What about people who are blind? What about people who are unfamiliar with the system? Having duplicate but separate tap stations for two trains using the same fare system at the same station operated by the same agency is transparent lunacy. UP is supposed to be for people who are using the...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

I think this is an important point when it comes to a solution-minded approach. Trespassers on lesser-used corridors that suddenly saw increased GO service are, IMO, at least somewhat likely to be habitual pedestrian users of the rail corridor rather than actively suicidal and seeking out an...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

I wasn't aware it was affecting all switch points, but I've noticed it around the south end. The switch heaters at Fairway seemingly run most of the day when it's below freezing (understandably), and Fairway speeds are the lowest they've been since the launch due to the slow order in the hydro...

    Toronto Union Pearson Express | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | MMM Group Limited

I mean, if it happens at all I imagine it would have all of those things except for the subway, unless something goes horribly wrong with the implementation.

    Toronto Union Pearson Express | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | MMM Group Limited

Unfortunately it seems like something that may only get resolved if/when the Pearson rail station becomes a reality. With a larger terminal you can have proper GO service, but if Pearson becomes "Union West", the need for an express train to Union declines, especially with RER. Similarly people...

    VIA Rail

I think virtually every populated place in Canada should have passenger rail. I don't particularly care about finances. These are political choices and there is plenty of money here if there was a government aggressive enough to take something from mining, logging, and petrochemical companies...

    Pickering Airport (Transport Canada/GTAA, Proposed)

As someone from Sudbury who takes coaches there regularly, it's great to hear these flippant opinions from people who are seemingly not familiar with rural Canada. I've taken flights from Sudbury before too (to connect to Pearson). A focus on flights over rail and bus favours wealthy business...

    Toronto Union Pearson Express | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | MMM Group Limited

Ontario seems slightly prone to, when finally building transit, building transit that doesn't fully consider needs -- I think UPX finding a commuter market is a bit of a happy accident given what the launch was like, but it is an important point that you're now having commuters taking trains...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Just to clarify, I didn't mean rationalizing the 25 routes so much as the 30, 31, etc that all connect to Bramalea and which aren't really as known or used as the GO train and 25s are. I think the 25 is a valid route in its own right, just that having it as the default intercity route going east...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

As a regular 25/29 rider, I can attest that the ridership is often pretty lopsided and there's a number of problems with it that make it a poor substitute for rail service and a poor connection to Toronto. A lot of the service expansion (and corresponding ridership growth) of the last 5 years...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

I love this guy's videos as he really gets into the history of how a lot of the way this stuff went down in the 40s and 50s wasn't due to some inexorable change but was to cater to wealthy car owners and mostly done by a handful of people, at least at first, and how the shift to a car centric...

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

It also looks like the bikes have to swerve around a set of parked cars (the dooring gauntlet) right after the platform ends, meaning cyclists are probably going to be at least slightly distracted about either the upcoming lateral shift or the pedestrians. There's just so much wrong with the...
