Roads: Ambassador & Gordie Howe Bridges

Maybe Donald Trump wants the Moroun family to own part or all of the Gordie Howe Bridge. The Moroun family owns the Ambassador Bridge (after buying it in 1979). The Moroun family is a major Republican political donor that spent years fighting the construction of the new bridge.

This will never happen, the Morouns are relatively small fish and almost certainly do not have enough money to buy into the Gordie Howe Bridge, which in itself would mostly be locked up in the current valuation of the Ambassador Bridge. I doubt that this current episode is in any way related to them.

So many bones have been thrown to the Moroun family to get this bridge built by both the original Trump admin and the Canadian government, including the granting of permits to expand the border plaza on the Canadian side, and to build a second Ambassador Bridge span. They squandered the opportunity and let the permit to build the second span expire.

The value of the bridge is going to tank relatively soon once the GHIB causes Ambassador revenues to collapse. They recently sunk a lot of money into refurbishing portions of the Ambassador too, almost certainly paid for through loans, so there is a nonzero chance they will ultimately have to exit their position and sell the bridge in the near future.

In exchange for accepting Donald Trump's idea, turn the Alaskan Highway into a "toll" road for non-Canadian plated motor vehicles?

If really mean, maybe make it a complete "toll" road from Washington State to Alaska, for American drivers?

I disagree,

The bridge is like 100% complete and it's wasted time, money and resources if that infrastructure isn't at least somewhat utilized. Every day it sits unused is one less day in it's usable life. Getting it operating will let us start recuperating the toll costs, and get revenue needed for basic maintenance and eventual full rehabs. It will also makes things far easier for those travelers and businesses who are using the Ambassador Bridge right now.

Even if traffic volumes are low for the early part of it's life, it gives the bridge authority and operators time to test all the functions almost as a open beta. How is the bridge operating/accepting the stresses of use? Is all the customs and immigration infrastructure working as intended? Etc. Any issues can then be worked out and that will ensure for a smoother, more efficient operation whenever higher travel demand returns.

Right now it's just words from a brain-rotting truth social post. No action. I wouldn't even recommend you read the entire Truth Social post unless you want to visit this moment from Billy Madison:

A long ramble with lies that some followers will believe or already do. He's tried to throw in every irritant he's felt. Favourite part is about making the deal with China, especially that the first thing they will do is "terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup"... Carney may have talked to him, but nothing is ever final with that guy.

Ironically the Gordie Howe does not have Duty Free facilities. So Moroun gets to keep his monopoly on that..

Oh yeah. I drove across the Ambassador Bridge once in 2024 thinking it’d be my last drive across the Morouns’ bridge. (I was right, but for other reasons.) The ramps on the Canada-bound side are designed to get you through their duty free shop and their duty free gas bar. Those were the real moneymakers as they made exceptionally good margins on the gas (which wasn’t that good of a deal as they inflated the tax free price).

Otherwise I took the publicly owned tunnel. I always loved the entry into Detroit going that way.

Tunnel or Blue Water Bridge for me, always

Ambassador might crumble before Gordie Howe opens. Shoddy maintenance and a daily beating from transports are taking their toll. Just look at the missing letter lights

I assume once Gordie Howe opens, Ambassador could take advantage of the lower traffic counts to close some lanes and do the most basic maintenance as cheaply as possible. That date keeps being pushed back.

They also want Gordie Howe delayed as long as possible so they can milk every last cent out of the decaying bridge. Looks like Matthew Moroun may have had some influence on Trump's Truth Social Post

Ambassador Bridge owner met White House official before Trump’s post: NYT report

Matthew Moroun, whose family has operated the Ambassador Bridge connecting Windsor, Ont., and Detroit, Mich., for decades, met with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick just hours before U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to block the opening of the nearby Gordie Howe International Bridge, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

Sources told The Times that Lutnick spoke with Trump by phone about the matter after the meeting with Moroun. The president would post his threats about not allowing the bridge to open just before 6 p.m. ET on Monday.

The Moroun family has made numerous efforts to stop the construction of another bridge between Windsor and Detroit. Matthew’s father, Manuel “Matty” Moroun, who died in 2020, publicly appealed to Trump during his first term in 2018 to revoke a presidential permit that former U.S. president Barack Obama granted to greenlight construction of the Gordie Howe Bridge.
