Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Have they disclosed why the design is in limbo? Does it have anything to do with the soil condition?

Queen shaft design ask for inclined retaining walls once it hits the bedrock (below piles) to expand the width and accomodate 2 separate tunnels. This is due to the confined surroundings where they can not excavate straight down from street level as in other stations shaft.
There are concerns after contractor's internal audit (overlaying european standards, not required in contract) that the angle of these walls are too agressive and poses potential risk. So now they are trying to justify the design by going back and refining the inputs, and at the same time working on an alternative design and assess the impact of this change.

TBM 1 is now expected to be assembled by March and TBM 2 by April. In the last community meeting slides, this was pegged for a May completion so it seems they're a bit ahead of schedule The most recent schedule anyways.

This is what the former Hudson’s bay flagship space look like along with the bridge to Toronto eaton centre I filmed as of today where you can see the construction site visible for the Yonge and Queen station:
Love the art! We need more of this in the city.

More good news: installation of footings for the Overhead Catenary System from Eastern to Gerrard starts next week.

It’s bonkers that they now need to drill in the corridor they just built. I am no pro but why wouldn’t they have pre fabricated and installed hydro lines and housings to support the hydro needs already. I suppose that may be difficult because they spent a great deal of time compacting soils in the new corridor but seems like a missed opportunity to apply best in class construction pre fabricated / integrated methods from other parts of the world that would have likely already finished this project. That said, its moving along with a certain visible progress which is good.

So the big white bridge is being shifted OVER the DVP next weekend? That's pretty cool. @kotsy will be out using his way points no doubt to show the step-by-step-by-step. ;)
This will be a pretty cool milestone. Not sure if this week’s weather will set this back but good to see this taking shape as another visible nod that they’re actually making steady progress here.

So is this OCS different than the ones that are giving Finch West & Street cars trouble
Yes they are different and should be superior to Finch West which is using the same junk that Metrolinx has known is failing the Confederation Line in Ottawa for 4+ years but they still moved forward with making the exact same mistakes that were made without pausing to learn from others mistakes.

Well, actually, many footings have been getting installed along the new retaining walls as these were erected. What's being done now is installing the footings where a new grade has been constructed. These need their own pilings drilled after all the new soil has settled. Seems like a rational sequencing to me.

At the end of the day, this is futureproofing. Far too early to string wires yet. That will happen when the time is right.

Fair, but not sure Mx is using best in class construction techniques. I’m watching them build at Queen/De Grassi and there’s a tonne of manual / small work being doing by individual contractors. Again, not an expert, but seems like there’s a lot of work that could be scaled thru engineering. Afterall, the original sales pitch for elevated Ontario Line was 2027, then. 2029 and now 2031 with rumours of 2032/33 already surfacing. Hopefully I’m wrong and inept Metrolinx overdelivers and is under promising (not likely tho)

I'm no expert either, but I am really impressed with how fast and furious the work is progressing between Cherry Street and Danforth GO.

The other day I shot a video out the window of a GO train, hoping to capture it all for posterity. When I played back the tape, I counted 56 construction vehicles ie pickup and dump trucks and 80 tracked/craning/drilling/concretepump units. And I wished I had gone into the orange tarpaulin business.

Could it be improved? Perhaps. But I am hopeful that whatever delays and overages emerge happen in other segments. This segment might well be ready before the rest of the lines are.

Looks like the first half of the Lower Don Crossing is all ready for it's shift over the DVP next weekend.

Maybe I'll camp out there in my car all weekend 🤣.
I'd be very surprised if Metrolinx doesn't have a time-lapse of the shift.
