Wasn’t aware of the DEMU pitch. Are UPX MUs required to do locomotive-cadence inspections, and would that be required for MUs without cabs?
As for VIA costs, the choice to go with cabs created a class of coach which can’t easily be swapped between roles. I doubt it was cheap. How much is the...
1. Separate HEP as the existing F59 setup does
2. This would be more about having a cleaner engine than a more powerful one and if the battery thing goes through there may be QSK60s looking for something to do
I speculated about putting in ex MP40 QSK60s plus a HEP engine, but that was on the premise of moving forward with a battery pilot on the donors, and as @smallspy noted the mount points would have to work too
Will be interesting how many good locos come from all these Metrolink units - almost...
Nobody can buy locomotives from Idaho any more. Maybe from Erie, where Wabtec's blueprints live now.
As far as LD trains go, one thought would be for VIA to consider freight locomotives on the head end and a generator coach behind, if that would allow them to leverage CN parts depots along...
I believe that even if Siemens wins the LD fleet order, it will be with a Amtrak Midwest config (MU/COMM) rather than Corridor/CAT5 simply because Siemens like the other manufacturers will not want to deliver all of VIA's requested car types at once, and that means being able to interoperate...
First of all, VIA tendered for trainsets - power and coaches together. Wabtec (or EMD with F125) would have had to partner with a coach builder. Bombardier could have put forward a diesel only ALP45 but they didn't have a ready to go coach model (and their ones for CTDOT were quite expensive I...
Doug Bardeau at groups.io posted the 2010 Northlander schedule. Here's the southbound:
Dep Cochrane 0720, Porquis Jct 0820, Matheson 0855, North Bay 1355, Washago 1630, arr Toronto 1915.
Shuttle Timmins 0745 South Porcupine 0755 Matheson 0840.
So it's likely that there will be two or more...

One of the things I have wondered about is the ability for the railways and commercial mobile network operators to cooperate not merely for onboard wifi but for signalling, and thus expand...
One wonders what the ONR planners are thinking now that some VIA Ventures are running with F40s at one end. Might need more than two APCUs up there soon...
isn't the issue (or an issue) with sodium that they are still significantly heavier in kg/storage capacity than lithium? Given electric vehicle weight is already an issue with lithium, I would think fixed storage would be the more likely usage for at least a few years.
Have been catching up on this thread and a few points:
A Bolton GO train station at Emery was mentioned a few times. I think Bolton GO would be a good project but Metrolinx clearly doesn’t, at least not in the foreseeable future. Look at the times they have produced maps lately with pencilled...
