Procurement of replacement EMD 12-710 prime movers is still a
very easy task. Some of the other hardware may be custom built for the F59 locomotive, but that really should not be a problem for an experienced shop like North Bay.
Those California units were clapped out and likely in need of a general overhaul anyways. Pulling the prime movers and replacing them is not anhardship. The carbodies and frames are what is of value.
(Only a few years ago, CPKC built a large number of 12-710 Eco's on the frames of ancient GP9's... those ECO's are actually not that different than a rebuilt F59)
In a perfect world, ML would have been able to procure additional MP40s or MP54s.... but since those aren't available, adding more F59's at a time when 2WAD may demand shorter consists anyway seems pretty reasonable. Known units of proven worth that match the existing remaining GO F59s....perhaps ML regrets having shed so many in earlier years....many are still out there in one form or another.
