It's probably because the buses were ordered with the screens and they arrived before the whole system was rolled out throughout the system.

If I remember right since they came from CA they have to be updated to THEIR emissions standard even though it's operating here?

They don't understand that any form of public transportation is better than people driving cars.

GO is getting their hands on as many F59PH and F59PHIs as possible so they have “donor locomotives” to gut further in an attempt to make a few working “Frankenstein” locos that run. Yes, my understanding is that all the prime movers have holes drilled in them, so likely they will require new ones. Good luck ONTC!

Procurement of replacement EMD 12-710 prime movers is still a very easy task. Some of the other hardware may be custom built for the F59 locomotive, but that really should not be a problem for an experienced shop like North Bay.
Those California units were clapped out and likely in need of a general overhaul anyways. Pulling the prime movers and replacing them is not anhardship. The carbodies and frames are what is of value.
(Only a few years ago, CPKC built a large number of 12-710 Eco's on the frames of ancient GP9's... those ECO's are actually not that different than a rebuilt F59)
In a perfect world, ML would have been able to procure additional MP40s or MP54s.... but since those aren't available, adding more F59's at a time when 2WAD may demand shorter consists anyway seems pretty reasonable. Known units of proven worth that match the existing remaining GO F59s....perhaps ML regrets having shed so many in earlier years....many are still out there in one form or another.

If you're talking about the 4 units they sold off in 1996, that's because they were the 4 newest units and would fetch the highest price on the market.

I speculated about putting in ex MP40 QSK60s plus a HEP engine, but that was on the premise of moving forward with a battery pilot on the donors, and as @smallspy noted the mount points would have to work too
Will be interesting how many good locos come from all these Metrolink units - almost looks like they are collecting Pokémon on this point.

I donno if that would fit the cowl unit body.
You don't need 4000hp. 3000 is enough for L10 consist. Leave the L12 for the bigger locomotives.

What about HEP? Run HEP off the prime mover?
If an F40PH and a GP 40 have 3000hp what makes the F59 superior with the same HP? They should all be able to run L10 consist? Why replace them with newer locomotives with the same HP?

1. Separate HEP as the existing F59 setup does
2. This would be more about having a cleaner engine than a more powerful one and if the battery thing goes through there may be QSK60s looking for something to do

Wouldn’t GO mechanics be experienced on EMD 16-645E3 parts? They haven’t rostered any 645 powered locomotives since 1994. Although Metra has plans to retire the F40PHs which are the 150-172 series with 4 already sold off to a Rail training facility in Colorado iirc.
