Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Looks like work on The Esplanade bike lanes is imminent. Taken this morning.

We could also probably start a pool on how many weeks/months it will be before motorists realise that the "New Esplanade' will be one-way westbound between Church and Scott!

It’s already fun! I was watching last night. The Esplanade is already closed eastbound between Scott St and Market St, yet still about 50% of drivers ignore the giant signs and continue the wrong way down the now one way street.

To be fair, the "CLOSED" signage was not very clear yesterday afternoon clear and the signs were placed on the new BIKE LANE so one could assume it meant "Lane Closed" not "Street Closed." BUT.......

If they really didn’t want cars going eastbound, they could definitely improve the signage at the 3 way stop.
Is your favorite contractor Sanscon working on this or maybe it’s Rabcon or someother con.

It is not Sanscon (thank god) and Rabcon are generally quite good. THe sign is clearly VERY misleading as the Street is clearly NOT closed (and allows motorists the ability to 'assume' it really means a LANE is closed!!

The City website blames Metrolinx. for the delay south of Queen - no word on the section NORTH of it.

EDIT/UPDATE:

I checked with the Project Manager and, as one might have expected.. Metrolinx is always (like Hydro) a convenient (though often accurate) whipping boy!

Hello David,

We have just received a new baseline updated schedule from the contractor that responds to some issues we have had recently with installation delays and permit requirements to get the fabricated metal components onto the site (with cranes in proximity to rail). It looks now like we will be able to open (pending the ability to pave with different cooler temp methods) in early 2026.

More will be on the website soon as we confirm all these details with the contractor in our next meetings.

Can you imagine the outcry from those elderly residents who opposed the bike lanes, the Novotel shelter during COVID, the temporary HART hub to help people with addictions, the list goes on - they'd lose their minds over any plan to grow and evolve the neighbourhood!

He would have just reopened the path and given notice to Mx that it was open now, too bad they were late.

Or if he was feeling generous, City crews would have done the fencing without permission and he would have sent Mx the bill.

For those unfamiliar with Daley, he was a better to ask for forgiveness than wait on permission kinda guy.

Famously, he really wanted to close Chicago's downtown airport but was having difficulty getting the required support from other governments to do so, he trumped up an 'emergency' and sent City crews in overnight one night to rip up the runway without permission.

He stranded a few planes and caused more than a little consternation.

Judging by the fact that I still occasionally see cars on the Queens Quay dedicated bike path, I would say that 10yrs+ is a reasonable estimate.

But that City is building a new pedestrian/cycling bridge across the Credit river beside the Metrolinx-owned LSW rail corridor.

Construction should just be starting and should wrap by the end of 2026.
