This week, UrbanToronto has been providing updates on construction sites around Square One Shopping Centre in the heart of Mississauga, from the cranes of Parkside Village’s Avia 1 & 2, Voya, and the initial phase of the Square One District, to the towers of M City. Today, our focus shifts to Exchange District Condos, just south the mall. Designed by Arcadis for Camrost-Felcorp, the quartet of high-rises is situated a short walk from the Burnhamthorpe stop on the under construction Hurontario-Main LRT.
Since our last update on the site five months ago, EX1 (topped in pink in the rendering above) and EX2 (topped in yellow) have made progressed significantly higher into the air. The excavation for EX3 (the tallest tower seen above, topped in light blue) is approaching grade, and EXS (the shortest tower, no glowing top), is fully topped off at 30 storeys.
Looking east to EXS in late April, 2024, below, we see the topped-off tower, with dark-tinted glazing alternating with strips of white cladding at each floor slab, all of it interrupted by the construction hoist affixed to its western elevation. Below, the podium levels, clad in vertically arranged light and dark panels, will mark the developing public realm here.
From to the north side of the site in May, 2024, EX3's below ground levels are getting closer to grade level, with wooden formwork and densely set rebar awaiting the next concrete pours. EX3 will eventually to be the tallest of the four Exchange District towers at 72 storeys. To the right, the podium levels of the adjacent EX2 can be seen.
Construction of EX2 has reached 16 storeys out of its eventual 42. This image captures the four-storey podium, extending southwards from the tower. Along the east elevation of the tower, a construction hoist clings to the elevation fronting Burnhamthorpe Road, ready to take workers, equipment, and materials from ground level up, and back.
Finally, we pull back to the south, to get a good look at EX1, now roughly three-quarters of the way to its final height, or about 45 storeys out of 60. The tower is massed as a series of stacked six-storey boxes, each turned 90 degrees to the one below, with construction actively proceeding on the next box up top. The design essentially simply rotates where the balconies are located for each box, while also alternating between black and white cladding.
Once complete, the towers will range in height from 96m to 232m, offering more than two million square feet of residential, retail, office, and commercial space.
