With all the average buildings that are added to the Greater Toronto Area’s skies every year, it's always a welcome moment when some of our more innovative architecture is recognized for its value. In Mississauga, M City’s flagship towers, M1 and M2, designed by Core Architects, have clinched an Award of Excellence in the 'Best Tall Building' category by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). Situated in the heart of Mississauga, the award honours the towers’ forward-thinking design and contribution to the urban environment. The CTBUH, the world's leading authority on skyscrapers and urban centres, annually celebrates outstanding new contributions that propel the building industry forward, with M1 and M2 emerging as co-winners in the 200-299m height category.

The CTBUH recently announced its full list of Award of Excellence winners for 2024, a roster of over 100 projects from across the globe recognized in over 20 categories. M1 and M2 join eight other projects in their category.

On the south side of Mississauga City Centre, M City from Rogers Real Estate Development Ltd. and Urban Capital Property Group is a masterplanned community that is currently under development. M City's location in the heart of Mississauga's growing downtown puts it walking distance to amenities such as Square One Shopping Centre and Sheridan College's McCallion Campus.

The award-winning M1 and M2 towers, now occipied, are distinguished by their unique architectural language, characterized by an undulating design where seven floor plates gradually skew alternately to each side, back and forth, as the buildings ascend. This dynamic design by Core Architects offers a unique geometry across the facade, intended to evoke movement and lightness. Each tower reaches a height of 62 storeys, making them the tallest structures in Mississauga. That status will end though once they are eclipsed by the 77-storey, the Arcadis-designed M3 currently under construction. Further phases are to come with M4, another Core-designed building already under construction, while the Arcadis-designed M5 along with M6, M7, and M8 designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects are still in the sales stage.

M1 and M2's podiums, characterized by faceted glass walls forming prismatic shapes, feature amenities including a rooftop skating rink on M1 and retail spaces at street level, contributing to the pedestrian-friendly environment supported by over two acres of public parkland.

John Anderton, Vice President and Treasurer at Rogers Telecommunications Limited, expressed his enthusiasm for the honour, stating, “We are thrilled to be recognized by a world-leading city building organization for the work we have put into delivering a best-in-class development in one of Canada's fastest-growing cities.”

For the M City lands, a long-held Rogers family asset, Rogers Real Estate Development Ltd engaged Urban Capital, particularly known for the River City development in Toronto, to manage the development of the site, leveraging Urban Capital's expertise in creating vibrant, high-density communities.

The CTBUH is the world’s leading organization dedicated to the design, construction, and study of skyscrapers and the urban environment. Through its annual awards program, the council promotes and recognizes innovative projects that contribute to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban habitat. CTBUH encourages industry professionals worldwide to adopt practices that enhance the livability, efficiency, and aesthetics of cities.

The award for M1 and M2 has significant implications for both the M City development and the wider Mississauga area. This accolade elevates M City's status as a flagship project within the region while highlighting Mississauga's growing prominence as an urban development hub.

Following this recognition, the project teams for M1 and M2 will present their submissions to an international audience and live juries at the CTBUH 2024 International Conference, set to take place in London and Paris from September 23 to 27, 2024, with the overall winners for each category to be announced at an awards ceremony.
