Water damage

It seems water damage to wood flooring from burst pipes, leaking radiators and so forth is very common. And the cost of replacing flooring can be high to occupant or insurance company.

What design approaches do tall buildings take to prevent water from leaking into floors below? Are floors sealed in some manner from one another.

Also, radiators seem to be a common problem, in my last building a drip caused half the floor to be replaced. I am surprised radiators haven't been designed to eliminate this risk - it doesn't sound like rocket science.

Don't be surprised.....lot's of things fail after time.

My apartment building (built in 1973) just suffered it's 3rd flood in the underground in one year which affected locker rooms, utility rooms and part of a parking area. I lost tens of thousands of dollars worth of original movie posters that I have been collecting since I was 12 or 13 years old. I had them rolled and inventoried in tubes and placed into a Rubbermaid container just in case of a water problem. The container seems to have a leak and all posters are lost. Because most of the lighting is out I couldn't inspect very long, plus I was standing in about 1" of sludge/mud that smelled like a sewer so I came home and cried then called my insurance carrier. They won't cover the loss but said my building's insurance company should. I sure hope so. I'll find out more on Monday.
As I was leaving another flood was in progress (that's #4) so I reported it and came home.

There was a huge flood in ROCP I about 3 weeks ago... Apparently a mistake was made during the repair of an HVAC unit, and torrents of water ensued. Before they could shut it off, the apartment was flooded, and the water made its way out, into the elevator lobby, and down the high-rise elevator shafts, damaging the elevators. I'm on the 50th floor, and we had no elevators for several days (19 floors to climb...), and then we were on a single elevator for more than a week. One of them is still down... One more thing to think about if you want to live high up in the sky!
