Vista's features look....familiar.

David Pogue always cracks me up.

We've known all along that Redomond's copying machines have been running all along. Attentive followers have seen this coming long ago.

The problem is that Vista is copying features available in Tiger while OSX is moving on to Leopard in the coming months.

I think that Windows' lack of inovation will be it's deadly decision once Leopard hits the shelves in Q2 of 2007.

They've been copying each other for years now.

"Wigets" have been available on Windows for years if you wanted them.

I see no reason to switch from XP. I presently use a cracked version of XP Pro and ubuntu. I only use windows for browsing the net and games.

I don't see why everyone is so obsessed with the Windows vs OSX... they're both hideously overpriced pieces of software. UW recently invested in a bunch of imacs. I have to say that OSX leaves something to be desired on the UI front, though having a unix terminal at your fingertips is nifty.

I have the opposite opinion, after having to use a windows xp machine at work after using osx for the last few years. It is always a relief to get home and back to my Powerbook.

It's really just a matter of what you're used to. I'm not a fan of terribly flashy UIs either. It's sad that it still takes so long on the imacs at school to load a web browser. My XP machine at home loads firefox in about a second. The imac I used took about 8 seconds. My computer cost substantially less....

Don't get me started on boot time either... More useless software that you seldom use veing loaded on startup isn't a feature in my books. No computer should need more than 30 s to boot these days.

well of course it depends on the age of machine but my 2.5 year old Powerbook boots way faster into OSX than less than a year old Dell laptop boots into Windows XP.

just a further comment. I am quite sure we don't need to descend into another mac vs windows thread..that ground is well trodden.

It is a funny video though.... something to keep in mind in the midst of the hype about the "groundbreaking" Vista operating system.

As I use both platforms as well (with a big mac preference), I, too, do not want this to turn into a mac versus windows thread. Use what you like, what works for you - or what your employer makes you use. I posted the link because I think David Pogue is funny, and it does say something about the lethargy and lack of creativity in large corporations.

I agree. I'm not Mac fanboy, but I readily admit that Windows Vista brings almost nothing new to the table after XP. I predicted that about 18 months ago, when I first saw Vista in action (Mr. Gates himself was demo-ing here at UW).

Most of the interesting things about Vista have more to do with making it easier from developers to make software for it and make that software more portable. All the visual whiz-bang is useless. I would turn those features off anyway.

Also, that's perhaps why my machine boots faster into XP... I set it to 'optimize for best performance' and I'm very stingy with what processes I run on startup. Nevertheless, my $1000 PC blows an $1800 imac out of the water in terms of performance...

Buying a copy of windows doesn't make a lot of sense, if you already own OSX.

^ yeah man, booting WindowsXP into my Mac once made me feel humm.. soiled... dirty.. ugh! :rolleyes

Btw, my uncertainty about joining the Mac world some years ago was that I wouldn't find the software to replace what I currently used. That was of course, just an unfounded myth: Not only did I find software to replace everything I used on my PC, I found better alternatives with cleaner, more intuitive interfaces.

There's no way I'd go back to Windows. Hasta La Vista, Vista.

David Pogue used (or still does) have a column in MacWorld magazine, and I thought he was a bit biased towards Macs, but brutally honest and also funny and not too technical in his writings so they are accessible and always interesting.

I'm a former Mac user - I still perfer Macs, but am fustrated by the lack of software for them, so I'm in the PC universe. Even simple things like photo downloading and basic editing seem so much easier with the old Macs I used to use versus the PC I use now.

The current Macs run both OSX and Windows. So they actually have more software available to them than PC's.

At one of the places in which I work they are already having the tortured discussions over switching from XP to Vista.
