Beautiful building, does anybody know more about it? What is its current use? Isn't there another matching building to the south that is empty and derelict?

I've always imagined these two buildings could be joined with an interesting addition as a beautiful museum site. Perhaps a museum of modern art might make a nice contrast? Perhaps a new performing arts venue?? I salivate at the possibilities.

Ah, it's probably one of the most talked about and/or speculated building on this forum.

Here we go again with the plans... good luck!

That my friend, is the future brick and stone home of UrbanToronto.

This building is for sale/lease isnt it? I can't imagine that nobody's stepped forward to move into a building with such potential. Maybe the owners are asking for too much?

Those two buildings are such cute little gems, especially the one to the north. I think one was selling for $4 million not too long ago. I hope they're put to good use soon.

yeah. its on Yonge near Queen. Would love to own that building.

Yes - a modern, glassy, (no bricks), highrise art gallery joining the two would be great. Now all we need is another major benefactor in this town.

"a modern, glassy, (no bricks), highrise art gallery joining the two would be great."

What do you have against bricks?

That pretty much describes what I've always thought U of T should build between CIUT and the Classics Dept.

Ganjavih: The property in the picture (205 Yonge St.) was purchased by a numbered company in 2003 for $2,810,000. It was listed for sale for a while in late 2004 at $3,850,000. This was apparently too high as no sale happened.

The old Bank of Commerce building to the south (199 Yonge St.) is under separate ownership. The land between them (I believe) is now owned by the city.

It would be a very interesting challenge to get these three properties together and do something which would be respectful of the two heritage buildings. It would take someone with deep pockets and a lot of imagination.

scarberiankhatru: the bricks thing is a bit of a joke arising from a comment I made at the pub night. I'm not a huge fan of bricks on highrises specifically, mostly because of how unsightly repairs to them can be once they have deteriorated. I grew up in the west end of Etobichoke, and would often see the apartments buildings lining either side of the 427. I assume that it's salt spray from the highway that has caused the accelerated damage to these buildings, many of which are now covered over in appalling alluminum siding... it's more than I can bear, and causes me to utter threats to bricklayers.

AoD: Jean Nouvel - now there's a starchitect I wouldn't mind a dose of. I saw his Culture and Congress Centre in Lucerne a few years ago, and fell in love...

He'd be perfect for a new Planetarium (or Centre for Cosmology in Thorsell-speak).

interchange:

Catch Jean Nouvel's Torre Agbar in the newest issue of Arch. Record! Sublime - make you weep having to look at that awful BA proposal.

re: Centre of Cosmology

Incidentally, he was one of the 12 shortlisted for the ROM project...

Wow - what a building! www.torreagbar.com/home.asp

Haven't seen the Architectural Record issue yet though (I should subsribem have been thinking about it) - I'll have to go looking for it soon.

Got my copy in the mail today. Nice looking building.

AoD, that's exactly the type of addition I was thinking of.

I wonder what is located behind these three properties (fronting Victoria St. then I guess)?

If this were to be used as a museum/public site I'd actually like to see a three sided courtyard in the space immediately between the two heritage buildings fronting Yonge, with the new joining addition staggered a little back, ideally rising up and back towards Victoria, and with the two heritage buildings forming both the north and south sides of the courtyard, sort of using a Nation Ballet Centre type template.

Oh to dream! I guess it'll have to wait for the next cultural renaissance.
