Power Outage

that's the second time in my memory that a large blackout like that occurred in that exact area... sadly that time i was living down there in the heat of summer and my roommate decided to light 1000 candles to light the apartment... which didn't help the situation.
that outage took a long time to fix because they had to ship in a specific hydro pole... i wonder what this one is? likely due to the wind, i presume

As I suspected, it is the exact same station that was hit...

Power outage causes delays

Power outages and wild, windy weather is creating havoc for drivers trying to navigate through the downtown core.

About 6,500 Toronto Hydro customers in the boundaries of College/Carlton St., Bayview Ave. to the east, Queen's Quay and York St. have been without power since about 4:15 p.m. today.
"We're currently experiencing technical problems in the hydro one transformer station in the Esplanade area," says Laura Cooke, spokesperson for Toronto Hydro.

"Crews have been dispatched at the transformer station to determine the cause and to undertake the necessary repair work."

Traffic lights are also out around Sherbourne St. to the DVP and Gerrard St. to Lakeshore Ave., which is causing driving delays.

"Traffic is quite slow but manageable," says Staff Sgt. Stan Belza of 51 Division.

"It appears that everyone is acting responsibly and citizens are using intersections as a 4-way stop."

At this point, the cause of the power outage is not known.

No word yet on when the lights will be on.

Bulletin: Classes Cancelled in some buildings, Tuesday evening, Nov. 27
By Ryerson Staff
November 27, 2007
Please note that classes this evening are cancelled in the following buildings:

1. George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre, 245 Church Street

2. School of Image Arts, 122 Bond Street

3. Victoria Building, 285 Victoria Street

due to a Toronto Hydro power outage.

Please note that classes in all other buildings on the Ryerson campus are being held as scheduled.

My building is also without power, but there are no night classes held there. Im in the library building now.

Hmmm. This afternoon I noticed they had fenced off part of the dog park on the southwest corner of Sherbourne and Esplanade, right on the edge of the Esplanade Transformer Station, and were busily digging away with a backhoe. Approximately 1.5 hours later: zap. No power in the downtown core because that same transformer went out for reasons not related to weather. Coincidence? Or did someone screw up? Bet we'll never hear another thing about it.

I remember that one as well as we had to close the office for a third time that summer.

One wing of St. Mike's was hit (all other wings were unaffected).

The building I was in (Maritime Life) was also without power, and my office has no natural light, so it was fun trying to grab all my things and go. My office also had no back-up lighting either!

We had a five minute blackout at home this evening. From what I could tell everything from Esplanade to King and from Church to Yonge was out. At least seven fire trucks showed up at Colbourne between Church and the King Eddy for about 15 minutes. Then they went home as everything had reverted back to normal.

When I was growing up in Don Mills, we used to have blackouts regularly. Gradually they became a thing of the past. As an adult living in North Toronto (Yonge/Davisville) and then at Yonge/Bloor, the only blackouts were the East York transformer explosion and the big east coast blackout of 2003.

Now, since moving down to Jarvis/Carlton, I've had a couple of blackouts in the last 6 months. The second was last Friday morning for more than an hour. Never did find out the reason.

Is this a regular thing downtown, or a recent phenomenon?

I think it's just the east side of downtown that's affected. I lived south of College, near McCaul for 2 years and never lost power once. During that time, I remember hearing about several east end blackouts.

I live in the western part of downtown, and I have had maybe one or two blackouts in years.

I can speculate about the reason for the disparity: Downtown Toronto's hydro system is divided into two almost-independent sectors, Leaside and Manby, with the boundary roughly at University Avenue. Leaside has about 2/3 of the load with Manby taking the remaining third. Leaside (unsurprisingly) draws its power from the Leaside transmission station through lines that serve Hearn in the Portlands and the Esplanade transmission station. Leaside receives its power from Cherrywood TS in Pickering.

Manby is a transmission station in Etobicoke near the Kipling substation. It in turn is fed from the Richview TS near the big 427-401 interchange and from Clareville TS in Vaughan. Lines from Manby run along the waterfront to the downtown area, with the largest transmission station at John St and Wellington.

On the whole, the Manby sector is less overloaded than the Leaside sector. That's why Hydro One has just built a new line that connects John TS with Esplanade TS, so that the downtown can be shared between the two sectors and reliability therefore somewhat improved. Note that it doesn't do a thing to increase the amount of power available overall to the downtown core. That's a job for the new power line in Riverdale that's got Peter Tabuns all excited, for the Portlands Energy Centre, and potentially for a new line under the lake to Niagara.

It was out all the way over to the east side of Jarvis too - only long enough for me to peer out the window, and walk to the kitchen. It came on just as I was about to light a candle.
