Hi all, Im moving from the maritimes to toronto. Im wondering if there are any reserve land force units in the area? Ones close enough that would allow me to still live in downtown toronto?

You're in luck. The Queen's Own Rifles and the 48th Highlanders are both based out of the Moss Park armoury right downtown on Jarvis.

Welcome to Toronto. I lived for three years in Fredericton, NB and remember fondly my visits to CFB Gagetown, especially to the museum. I remember riding my 1969 Triumph motocycle in the woods and meeting a pair of LAVs at a rural gas station. A great group of guys.

Toronto has four armouries, two of which are downtown.

Moss Park Armoury http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moss_Park_Armoury Located at Queen and Jarvis, right in the heart of downtown east.
The Armoury is currently home to:
- 25 Field Ambulance
- 48th Highlanders of Canada
- 7th Toronto Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery
- The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada

Fort York Armoury http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_York#Fort_York_Armoury is located near the CNE Grounds in the south-south-west area of downtown.
The Armoury is home to:
- The Queen's York Rangers
- The Royal Regiment of Canada
- The Toronto Scottish Regiment
- 1st Battalion Irish Regiment

Denison Armoury
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denison_Armoury Located in the northern part of the city, Sheppard Avenue West and Allen Road, so not downtown at all really.
This Armoury in home to:
The Governor General's Horse Guards
- 2 Intelligence Company
- 32 Combat Engineer Regiment
- 25 Service Battalion
- 32 Military Police Platoon

Dalton Armoury
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalton_Armoury Located in Scarborough Markham Road and Highway 401, is distant from downtown.
The armoury is currently home to:
- Buffs Company, The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada

There are also armouries in Oakville http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakville_Armoury and and in Georgetown http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Col_J.R._Barber_Armoury

You'll want to contact the armouries closest you to see what Reserve units are available.

In addition, at CFB Downsview, despite having been officially closed, remians as the Land Forces Central Area headquarters.

I wonder if the grenade range is still in operation at Borden?

Crouch in ditch. Use both hands to accept grenade from sergeant. Pull pin on 5 second grenade. Count to 2. Throw. Follow thrown grenade in air to assess where it landed (mandatory). Pull head back into ditch. Boom.:):):)

My wife used to work at Central Tech School. In the basement they have an extensive and large space with tunnels, etc. including a firing range, which was used during the Second World War for training, and then by gun clubs until the 1950s or so.

Yep, that's right; Northern, my alma mater has one too. The older guys in the reserves told me they used single shot Lee Enfields chambered for .22short.
