Hong Kong's MTR announces big profits in 2005

A ride under Hong Kong's system costs anything from 3 to 18 HKD (although a bit more to the airport) depending on the distance, which is equivalent to $0.5 to $3.

Maybe the prices have gone up? One of my trips during rush hour (5 stations from the Kowloon side to the HK Island side) iim sure cost 22 bucks hk, which is crazy cost, but it makes sense.

I think even GO is pretty cheap compared with other commutter services in the states.

One thing I can't get my head around though is that Toronto's airport limo service is a lot more expensive than say, NYC. I can't believe it cost me more to get from the airport to Lorne Park (Missy), than the UES (Manhattan) to Newark, which is the most expensive airport to get to in NYC area. I even had the limo drive double check and show me the route grid cost map.

Just wait for the GTA fare card

Thats a good point GregW. The TTC should also hopefully get more revenue by taking tokens out of the system, to prevent this specific type of counterfitting. If they implement an Octopus type card for the GTA, you also get the one time initial fees as well.

However, this will definately mean, if such a system is hopefully implemented, that gone will be monthly pass, which could hurt ridership.

That fare is not only crazy, I think it's impossible. I just checked the MTR fare table and there's no way you have to pay that much to get from Kowloon to Hong Kong. For comparison, the highest fare you could pay on MTR regular routes is $26 HK to get from eastern HK/Kowloon to Disneyland or Tung Chung (with Octopus it is $23.10).

Were you in a hurry to cross the harbour? If you weren't it would be better to take a cross-harbour tunnel bus. Yes, you'd be sitting in traffic, but if you're sitting on the upper deck you can enjoy great views of the city. Better still, take the Star Ferry, one of the cheapest, most relaxing transit modes in HK, and it has the best views of the skyline!
