Great food in unlikely places

Just was in the Corso Italia neighbourhood today for the first time. The Big Slice may appear to be your run-of-the-mill pizza joint, but they have some awesome Italian panini sandwiches. For five bucks, you can get a massive sausage, meatball, or veal sandwich stuffed with cheese, peppers, mushrooms, and onions. Located at the corner of St. Clair W. and Westmount (East of Dufferin).

Anyone else with some stories of seemingly ordinary places with good food?

There's another place which has similar sandwiches. Cheap, good, and filling. They've gotten all kinds of positive reviews/awards. It's a little Mom & Pop joint; you'd never find it if you didn't know it was there. I think it's between Queen and King, just west of Bathurst. Anybody know which one I mean?

Harbord Fish and Chips are fantastic but you wouldn't know it by walking by it. It has the size and aesthetic appeal of an outhouse, but the food is outstanding.

BuidTO,

I don't know of a place between King & Queen West of Bathurst, but, west of Bathurst between College and Dundas at 244 Claremont (it's a one way north that does not exit at College. There have been a few others opened around the city, but I think this is the original) is California Sandwhiches - possibly the best veal sandwhich in the city. Lucky for me, I only have to walk around the corner when a craving hits.

California Sandwiches is usually voted "Best Sandwich" by Now and Eye...and it really is fantastic. They have a killer breaded eggplant parmisan sandwich there too that rocks. And about a half block north of California's is a really old-school pizzeria called Bitondo's: they make amazing pizza and an alright sandwich too. Another really good place for Italian sandwiches is called Papamio's and it's on Dupont right across the street from the big Loblaws at Christie. Total mom and pop shop but it's really, really good food.

California Sandwiches is overrated.

Best Souvlaki on a pita w/ fries at SqareBoy on Danforth.

Best inexpensive Chinese dining at Rolsan on Spadina.

Best Bakery and latte at Caldense Bakery at Dupont and Symington.

Best bagels at Bagels 'n' things on Bayview s. of Eglinton.

Noodle Wok in Mississauga. South side of Burnhamthorpe near Mavis.

The House Delight is my favourite. It's a "bird's nest" (crunchy noodles) with beef and vegetables on top.
