Google Maps Europe

I was very surprised to see that Google Maps has extended its coverage to continental Europe. That means I'll have more maps to explore in my spare Internet time. Woohoo!

A sample of European Google Maps...

Map of Europe

Cities:

Central Paris Hybrid Map (showing Metro stations)

Amsterdam Hybrid Map

Berlin Hybrid Map (With U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations)

Rome Hybrid Map (Tons of ruins and one way streets!)

Vatican City Hybrid Map (the boundary between Italy and the Vatican is clearly marked)

Map of Bari, Italy (for miketoronto, of course... check out the density of the streets!)

Madrid Hybrid Map (someone can make a Google map comparing the Madrid metro system with Toronto's subway system)

Hybrid Map showing the Acropolis in Athens (in Greek letters)

Hybrid map of Istanbul, Turkey

Moscow Hybrid Map

Yes. :p

But most of what they do, they do extremely well. They've more or less revolutionized most of the things they've touched.

When I read about some event somewhere, some notorious thing, or just some address, I often plug it into google maps to see a picture of it....almost automatically, and for fun.

Google has changed my life in many other ways though, not just the fun -- the way i do things -- completely. For me, and many i assume, it's probably as revolutionary as the personal automobile was when it came out.

We've just been googled too.

weee

The Melbourne maps are still showing pre-fed square stuff though. *shrug*

Wish they'd had this last year. I had a very hard time finding decent maps on-line of Paris, Brussels and Moscow when I was there. Fantastic that they have all the metro stations on the maps of Paris. Very cool.

Now if they just got Hong Kong, Beijing and Ulaan Baatar, I'd be set :)

^ The Chinese Google site (the one with the censorship) already has a version of Google Maps for China, in Chinese. It includes maps for major Chinese cities such as Beijing (but does not include Hong Kong).

There are some drawbacks to Chinese Google Maps. There are no satellite maps or "hybrids". I couldn't find a way to see the map without doing a search for a location first. Like most Chinese websites, the Chinese Google Map tends to load slowly.

Still, it's worth a look. You can check out the massive expressway network in China, highlighted in orange just like in the English language Google Map.

Hmm, interesting. The location in the map above was actually quite close to my hotel. I was about 2 km to the north-west. Anyway, wouldn't of helped me much - my chinese isn't so great ;)
