Exposed Concrete Ceilings

Are the exposed concrete ceilings really an interior design trend or is it just a way for the developers to save money?

I have noticed exposed concrete ceilings very clean, but I have seen others with a lot of stains, is this due to the quality of the concrete? or what is the problem?. I have been in 2 different units of Freed buildings and the ceilings do not look very good, a lot of stains and very rough patches.

poor quality concrete, forming, workmanship etc are all possibilities which would ruin what could be a beautiful material and texture.

personally, i would stay away from exposed concrete ceilings.
i might consider a feature wall, but ceilings would be much harder to 'fix' if the quality is not up to par.
