So after our day off, we took the train to Berlin. We stayed there 4 days and 3 nights. Deutsche Bahn has some great specials for these sort of getaways where you can get a combo of hotel and round-trip train travel for a great price.
We travelled there in an ICE train which took around 6 hours to get Berlin from Ulm. The package came with first class tickets but after traveling in both classes, there isn't much difference besides a bit more room, you can order drinks/food to your seat, and once in a while you get some free snacks.
The train that goes to Munich (ReginalExpress)
Our train pulling into the station.
Just outside of Stuttgart, There are these terraces used for growing what looked like grapes.
Some pics of Frankfurt Hbf
Coffee is never served in plastic cups.
Wind turbines are everywhere!
Pulled into the newly constructed Berlin Hbf. This really is a beautiful station. I'll post more pics of it in later posts.
After getting settled in, we still had about half a day to explore the city. Our friends recommended taking a local bus route (100) which pretty much takes you by all the major attractions of the city. We also bought the Berlin Welcome Card which included transit for 72 hours in Berlin.
The bike culture there is enormous. You can see here that bikes travel with normal traffic and they use the Bus Lane as their own.
The end of the line was close to the tower so we decided to go there and see the city during day and night.
The Palast der Republik being demolished.
Having come from Toronto, Berlin, and other German cities, seems very very low. There are a few lone buildings which break the low-rise threshold like this hotel.
Looking west.
We also ate in the revolving restaurant. Considering the tower being a tourist trap, the prices were quite resonable and not higher than any other place in Berlin. Sure beats the prices at the CN Tower.
The lobby at ground level.
Looking at Alexanderplatz Station.
A covered promenade with a hotel above shops and restaurants. This is also where they have the Aquadom and Sea Life Berlin which I will get to in a later post.
A fountain at the end of the covered promenade. Changes colors too.
The DDR Musesum on the opposite side of Berliner Dom.
Berliner Dom. Visited it on the last day. It has amazing views from the top.
Back at Berlin Hauptbahnhof where Bombardier welcomes you
Next up is Treptow Park, the Alexa shopping center, Aquadom and Sea Life, Jewish Museum, Pergamon Museum, and the Reichstag.
