And according to a defected North Korean engineer, it was impossible to put elevators in the structure. Yes, you have to walk up all 105 stories. Western tourists can now get a taste of what it's like to be Core Class of North Korean Songbun.

Before they started working on it again a couple of years back, the official line on this building is that it didn't exist. It was regularly airbrushed out of photos of Pyongyang, even though it's absolutely massive and impossible to avoid noticing. Commentators over the years have regularly noted that there's something "off" about this building that gives it a sinister air.

There is also some question as to whether any of the hotel rooms will ever open.
